  • Interesting to look at some of the players we had in the 2017/18 when we failed in the playoffs:

    Konsa
    Bauer
    DaSilva
    Sarr
    Kashi
    Fosu
    Aribo
    Dijksteel
    Phillips

The squad was probably better than I remember with the exception of up front where we had Ajose and Magennis.

The current squad has more experience but not the same potential of the 17/18 one.

Cant really say we had Phiillips that year as Amos was the Goalkeeper in that team

Although know where you're coming from mentioning him
  • At one point we were well positioned with games in hand. We blew that advantage and reversed it. No indication from our performances or results to encourage any thoughts of a run of winning games. None whatsoever. Last couple of games Bowyer has stopped with his ludicrous tactics and selections and we look better for it. Bang average but at least better.

You have got to look at them through 17/18 eyes.  The 17/18 squad is better NOW than the current squad.

The 17/18 squad now against the current squad in 17/18 would be an intresting watch!

Before the season kicked off I had us down for the following:
    13/03ShrewsburyH3
    16/03Bristol RH0
    20/03AFC WimbledonA3
    27/03CreweH3
    02/04DoncasterA1
    06/04LincolnH3
    10/04SunderlandA0
    17/04IpswichH1
    20/04PlymouthA3
    24/04PeterboroughH1
    01/05AccringtonA3
    08/05HullH3

I don't think we'll achieve anything like the 75 that would get us.

I now think 68 is far more likely.

Especially given our season so far:

A lot of the squad from 17/18 kicked on and in terms of potential it definitely had a lot to offer - we also had Grant out on loan. The current squad has a lot of experience but I'm not sure how many of this squad are moving upwards?

I totally get that but I don't think there is much in it as they were then.

From another thread, I think we need 6 wins, 7 to guarantee it, not impossible at all.

I've got us on 71 too, but via a different route. Personally I don't think 71 points will be enough.

  • Too much has been made of the 'top' teams we have in the run in. The reality is that half of them will be on the decline.

  • 73-75 will put us right in the mixer. 71 is probably not quite enough this season.

    Half of them already are.

Lincoln 1 win in 7 and just lost at home to Rochdale and (a very much improved) Gillingham
    Doncaster 2 wins in 10.
Portsmouth 1 win in 8, 4 defeats in a row. They do play almost every bottom half side in their run in though, so with a new manager can't be ruled out.
    Accrington 2 wins in 11.

It's so tight though that any side putting a run together will have a chance. Just 6 points separating 6th to 13th.

It's a poor division though really, we've been shit for months, have the third worst home defensive record.........and we're 6th.
  • Doncaster and Ipswich look like must win games if we are to make the top 6. With rose-tinted spectacles on, I can see us getting to 72 points which might just make 6th. Unfortunately, this bunch are just not consistent or predictable so I think we are probably looking at 8th place on 67 points. Hope I am wrong.
  • These other teams may be on bad runs but they will still be better than us. We struggled to get past a pretty poor Bristol Rovers last night. I’m certainly not holding my breath.

Wimbledon is a must win at the weekend before we hit the final run in. Plenty of big matches at the weekend taking place Sunderland/Lincoln. Pikeys/Doncaster, Pompey/Ipswich & Oxford v Blackpool.

A positive result for us andLincoln losing means we bring them back in to the battle for the top 6s.

Looks like it’s 7 teams for 3 slots (Sunderland are out of reach).

  • I dont think postponing the Crewe game will help us either. Just started a run & then everything stops for 2 weeks.

Still think we will finish between 8th & 10th.

So getting something vs Sunderland would be great.

Would need to beat Doncaster, Lincoln, Ipswich and win 3 more (Crewe, Accrington and Plymouth being the obvious ones), taking us to 74 points.

We can't even beat Wimbledon, 2nd bottom and with second worst home form.  In fact, they outplayed us for 40mins of the second half and we held on.

Two weeks for Adkins to turn our entire season around and for Innis, Gilbey and Matthews to get fit and to remember they are decent.

Problem is that in previous season teams at the top have had more points (like us with 101) and therefore have picked up more points from teams in & around the play offs. This season no one has run away with it & so it is more bunched up between 4th & 10th.

I think we need at least 75 points & due to our GD maybe even 76 or 77.

It’d be really unfortunate if we get to 74 points and miss out. It’s been enough throughout the last decade. Typical Charlton!
  • Oh, and our 2 "games in hand" are both at home. Not good.
  • Oh, and our 2 "games in hand" are both at home. Not good.
We’ve won our last two games at home. Carry that on and we’ll be fine.
  • Seven unbeaten. Four wins, three draws. Games getting a bit harder now but we're coming into form and confidence will be the highest it's been in months.
  • edited April 2021
5 wins out of 8 games left, needed, home form needs to improve and we need to stop shipping goals, job done ( in theory!)

I know people think we’ve may have underachieved this season with the players / budget we’ve got in this division, but I think with a transfer embargo last summer, a wage cap in January, injury list as long as your arm, a manager losing the plot and calling out players in public as well as playing players out of position playoffs would be an amazing achievement this season considering all that’s gone on.

The ‘’Hope’ has been turned on again even if we don’t make it, where as we would not even be in this position if Bowyer were in charge, whether it’s enough for this season, time will tell, I’m pretty relaxed about it all, even though yesterday I was incredibly nervy watching the game!
