While watching an endless succession of poorly hit and placed corners in last nights game, I wondered why nothing was being done about them in an attempt to do better. Way back, when I was playing competitive football, the team captain would have made somebody else take them, without waiting for instructions from the sideline. Similarly, he'd be the one deciding who'd take a free kick or a penalty. There'd be no "designated penalty-taker", the captain would decide on the pitch who was "hot" that day, and he was most often right.
Certainly we sometimes hear captains yelling for defensive formations, but that's always been their role. I'd like to see more decisions being made by the team captain on the pitch.
