Wisdom teeth removal

So, found out today that I need at least one of my wisdom teeth’s removed.
Not looking forward to it.
Any lifers who can share stories, ideally some which will calm me down (‘It’s not really that bad’ etc etc).
Is the procedure itself painful? Even if you’re under local anaesthetic, surely there will still be discomfort, when they rip a tooth out of your mouth.
Also, if they want to remove the top wisdom teeth, they’ll need to cut the gum open, as these teeth haven’t erupted. Sounds horrific.

  • Are you having it done in hospital or dentist. I had mine removed in Perth Hospital. In one day out the next...apart from a few dissolving stitches, that were uncomfortable for a few days, and I had to eat stuff like mince till they went, it was fine. Don't worry about it.
  • Many years ago when I was 19 I was going out with a dental nurse. One evening I went to pick her up from the surgery in New Cross.

There had been a problem with an X ray machine which had just been fixed. I was volunteered for a test X ray. The dentist then appeared with the words "Poor Christopher". I was then told I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth that needed removal.

The surgery had a weekly visit from a Dr Eggleston a specialist at the Eastman Dental Hospital which meant that I could have them removed in the chair under a general anaesthetic. This happened 2 days later.

Can't tell you what happened as I was out for the count. When I came round I was driven home. My mouth was swollen and I could feel the stitches.

I had to pretend it didn't hurt as my girlfriend was having hers removed the next week. I got to see some of the tools they used. One was called an elevator. It was a small chisel used to chip the tooth out of the jaw.

The swelling in my mouth lasted a while and I kept chewing the stitches. Painkillers were needed.

I was fine once the stitches came out.

    You did ask.

P.S. I have since had teeth removed under local
anaesthetic. You just feel the pressure as they pulled.

P.P.S Dr Eggleston later drove us to a wedding in Yorkshire. Most of the way at over 100 mph up the A1.
  • Not sure yet (hospital or dentist).

Oh well, I guess I need to grow a pair.
  • I had a couple removed under local anaesthetic. Don’t remember any of it. Bit sore when the anaesthetic wears off. These things are nowhere near as bad as we make them out to be.

    sure it’ll be fine.
  • Had two impacted wisdom teeth removed at Queen Marys Sidcup. Took about 90 minutes of discomfort more than pain.
  • Can cope with the pain afterwards, if it’s a dull pain.
No better excuse to lie on the couch for a few days.
  • Had all of mine done at the dentist,2 one day and the other 2 a couple of weeks later, absolutely no problem at all
  • Biggest issue I found was keep putting my tongue where the teeth used to be....like you do when a filling drops out.
  • had one pulled out under a local at the dentist, genuinely thought when I heard the crack that he'd broken my jaw (couldn't feel a thing due to the local), but he literally had a pair of plyers and one foot on the chair.

a dull pain after, like I'd taken a decent right hook - but fine with paracetamol

I’m almost looking forward to it now.

  • Had an upper one taken out under a local at the dentist a few years ago. A bit uncomfortable as he was trying to lever it out but didn’t hurt.

He showed it to me after he pulled it out, couldn’t believe how big it was.
Ah, the words your Mrs’s whispers to me all the time.

I really wish she would stop taking about your teeth when I’m with her.
  • I had 2 out at the same time, one had to be broken into pieces. Try and do local anesthetic if you can, you'll not have to deal with feeling groggy and pain after.

For me I had zero pain during the procedure. It felt a bit uncomfortable but only because it feels strange. Listen to the advice about keeping it dry, you don't want to risk dislodging the clot. I made sure I had cocodamol waiting at home, anaesthetic wore off a couple of hours later, few pain killers and an afternoon on the sofa later I was fine.

I should have added on my post, my problems stared a could of weeks later. They actually used the wrong anaesthetic. I really hope they don’t do the same with you - you never know...

    That last sentence...
I didn't even realise when I was typing it how it read (for once)!

    *look away now @Danepak

I had one of mine removed about three years ago now and it's up there with one of my most painful experiences.
I'd been having a bit of trouble with it in the years previous but my Dentist said that considering my age (nearly 40!) It would soon stop giving me trouble as it would just stop growing.
Fast forward two years and it was giving me lots of grief. So an appointment was made for me to see a visiting dental practitioner who specialised in extraction of WT under local anaesthetic.
So i turned up on the day and early into it I made my first mistake. On his initial assesment the dentist declared that mine was a classic case and would he mind if his trusty nurse)assistant took some pictures during the procedure?
"Fine" said stupid me!. This probably added what felt like an hour to the whole process! Every time the dentist got to a 'bullet point' in the piece, in she was with the Canon zoom lens, snapping away. I just wanted the bloody thing out now!
Turned out it wasn't such a classic case and the fella was having some real trouble accessing a certain point. So he had to drill it in 3 places. Crack it with a pair of pliers and pull it out on 3 bits. The 'cracks' will live with me for a long time!
Was in pain for about a week after and if memory serves me right got an infection in it and had to go back for antibiotics.

And get this. A couple of weeks after, I felt a small bump on my other lower gum. You guessed it. Another bloody wisdom tooth started to rear his bloody head and has been slowly haunting me ever since as it slowly grows! So much for me for being too old!
Another trip to the demon dentist probably awaits!

Should’ve had all 4 done at the same time.

Dentist told me that the one in my right lower side definitely has to go (it’s causing an infection). I’ll be fine in a few days time, but it will eventually return.
When it’s not swollen anymore, I’ll go and get it done.
The one on the left might be OK and same with the two in the upper.
The upper ones hasn’t erupted and should be fairly easy to remove (but they’ll need to cut it open...).
I might just have all four done now, so I don’t have to worry about it later...or I might be a chicken and only have the absolute necessary done this time.

I recommend general if you agree to have others dealt with too.

Had a triple removal as they were impacted and affecting the teeth next to them, apparently the 4th wasn't an issue.

The recovery process is fine. Cleaning the holes is bit difficult and the smell can be vile if you don't clean the holes properly. Also worth rembering it has to be done very slowly and carefully to avoid dry socket.

Ran a half marathon 3 days after the procedure which was risky, but I was fine. My only risks were additional bleeding and dry socket of which I got neither...

I am almost certain you'll be fine.

*edit just seen the bit where you say they're cutting them out, you should be doubly fine if they're sewing you up after. (Recommend nutritional shakes if you're worried about any discomfort in chewing).

  • I had all four of mine under a general anaesthetic and it was fine. Went to hospital in the morning, teeth removed, got picked up about 4pm and home. Had to gargle with salt water to dissolve the stiches and had a bit of pain for a few days but nothing to worry about.

Back in the '80s my sister had all 4 removed and got on a bus home all by herself. She was 18 at the time.
Don't take any notice of the wimps on here, you'll be fine. A long as you are hard as nails like my sister.
  • I have 2 huge cysts that require 3 teeth removed (2 of them wisdom) in order for the cysts to be scraped out.

No date for the operation yet.

I think I will try and give this thread a miss until post op.
  • All four of mine were pretty stressful.  Here's the story of one of them:  (View Post) which swelled up quite badly - I hitched up to Leicester immediately after to see a girlfriend, she wasn't overly impressed with me turning up looking like I had a tangerine in the side of my mouth.
  • Have had all 4 out, two different occasions. Second time was a lot better than first. Bottom left had broken and because I hated the dentist (bit of a phobia) like 20 years ago (now got over it) I took painkillers for about a fortnight before it became infected and I had no choice but to go and remove it. I had an abscess, so had to take antibiotics for a number of days before the procedure. The issue I had was that the antibiotics had not worked fully and as the root area was still infected, as the dentist drilled down to break or loosen (have no idea), I could feel and hear everything while under local. From recollection we stopped, I had another few days of antibiotics and then had the two removed. Just unfortunate and in no way should put you off.

The only other thing worth forewarning is a cracking sound when the tooth is broken or dislodged.

Other than that, just a bit of discomfort after, no pain, which can be managed easily with painkillers.
    Good luck!

  • Had 2 out when I was about 15, was fine apart from it felt like the bleeding wasn't going to stop afterwards.
  • I had two broken ones taken out about a month ago.
They were both snapped at gum level & they had been fine like that for years but after numerous infections in one of them my dentist said it was time to out them but it would be done at Milton Keynes hospital under general anaesthetic as the gums would be cut, then COVID came & I finally had my appointment last month but they told me the hospital wasn’t doing it at the moment due to COVID so I was booked into a specialist dental suite in MK instead & the only difference would be they can’t do general anaesthetic only local , hang on I said if this can be done under local why didn’t my dentist just do this in the first place but they just said they were doing things differently due to Covid.
I was dreading it when I turned up & I asked the Eastern European dentist if this would be ok to do under local & he replied “ we are men no? At home we would use none” , my heart sank and I closed my eyes as the chair went back & they injected the local then in 6 minutes he said “there you go my friend I’ll leave you with the nurse to stitch” & 5 mins later I was out the door.
I didn’t feel a thing throughout or after , never a nice experience having teeth taken out but it’s over quick enough & it will never hurt again .
On a side note , my appointment was at 2.30 , I found this hilarious/concerning yet despite several explanations the misses & kids did not.
  • My cat is having an extraction today. £480.

    Bastard.
