  • [cite]Posted By: F-Blocker[/cite]I was talking to one of my cousins at the weekend and apparently his firm blocks facebook/myspace/youtube/ebay etc all day EXCEPT 12-2pm when people are on lunch. Seems quite a good idea (from a management point of view).

Strange that they allow the staff to surf Porn all day instead though ;-)
  • Mcs, i think your now my friend but i can't remember my bloody password to get back in, doh!

just got a message from the missus (the only one...) who is on holiday on Kavos with her mates. She is obviously drunk and text me this:

"just realised that you are going out tonight with your "football girlfriend", have a good time"

    I will thank you.

  • Have you not heard what goes on in Kavos?? I'll show you a video me and my pals made over there a few years ago.
  • Well - I'm responsible for looking after internet access where I work and I block almost everything. This is, of course, partly because I'm and miserable C & unt, but also because we only have a relatively small amount of bandwidth (1.5mb, shared between 4000 people) and also because I don't want to have to deal with the legal fallout of someone spending hours every day on the Internet, someone else grassing them up and then justifying to a lawyer why they were able to do this in the first place.

Seriously - all this compliance crap is a legal minefield and it's better, from the network admin's point of view, just to stop people doing it in the first place. Facebook is one of the worst because for some reason, South Africans, Kiwis and Australians are the biggest piss-takers of all when it comes to misusing internet and email - since Facebook is one of the biggest sites our antipodean cousins waste time on, blocking it is a no-brainer.

I also block Ebay, MySpace, Friends Reunited and thousands of others. If they don't like it - they can always leave.
  • I can see why some sites would be blocked to help save bandwidth, but in others it can be just plain silly.

Some local councils block Flickr, for example, which is probably why when I reported some graffiti to Greenwich Council and sent them a Flickr link so they could see a picture of it (saves sending an attachment, which is a pain) they asked me to describe it... and they still did f*ck all about it.
  • Good point Inspector - apart from the fact that Flickr is (or was, before I blocked it) the seventh highest site for bandwidth usage and tenth highest for number of visits (I'm not sad enough to actually remember those numbers - I'm even more sad because I'm at work today finishing off my monthly reports and have instant access to my stats). Again probably due to Our Friends From The Southen Hemisphere no doubt.
  • Heh. Which uses up the most bandwidth? Is it badly-designed MySpace pages, with lots of LOLs flying around the place?

I do think that outfits which have to deal with or understand the public should be a bit more relaxed about their staff dabbling in that sort of thing - it'd help them understand the world their customers/taxpayers/whoever have or choose to live in. It'd be no good working for Tesco if you're not allowed to look at an anti-Tesco blog, for example.

But I understand the bandwidth issues and all that (as I merrily waste a Sunday afternoon watching old videos on YouTube).

[cite]Posted By: razil[/cite]Talking of beards, anyone ever see that station fella at London bridge with the orange beard, real character innit.

All the time and the sight of him always raises a chuckle!!

I'm on Facebook now (getting back to the point!) but don't totally trust it as we are allowed to access it at work, which worries me somewhat. Most fun/interesting sites are blocked (MySpace, YouTube but not CL!!) so I suspect they might be spying on employees via it.

They did block it here Wilma, but the lawyers kicked up a stink, citing that they used it for business network (yeah ok!)... within a few hours the block was lifted, with a warning that misuse would see it blocked again....

Oh yes, I remember now. "Don't watch any videos and you'll be okay"!! And "business networking" YEAH RIGHT! It's mostly marketing people on there anyway - the lawyers don't know how to use new technology like the internet or email.

I tend to concentrate on real security issues at my place like password sharing, desktop picture, etc..
