  • Look ? (Aussie accent)

We won and we have never done that before in the first game of the Euro's.

Croatia were Runners up in the World cup after beating England.
We didn't play Turkey or Russia.
  • No complaints. Really good performance. Southgate has put together a team that looks more like a club side.
That's the biggest thing, over the years we have individual talent and great players but not a great team.

We have that team ethos with these younger players who all grew up together.

I will tell you what unlike Stevie G MBE, Fat Frank and Scholes, Foden, Mount and Bellingham could play in the same team for years.

Is this the best group of young players we have ever had?
Certainly the best group of youngsters that we dont have to worry about trying to put in the same team like we have done.
  • Scotland the perfect game to rotate the side a bit
    As long as we win.
    Jockistan to finish bottom please
  • Bellingham will be a great player, my mate at work knows him well and had followed him since he was a kid, he has the X factor and is still only 17! Phillips was excellent, well taken goal by Sterling, but I'm still worried by Stones and why Trippier at LB? Walker I didn't think played well enough to start the next game!
  • How good was Bellingham when he came on. 3 or 4 crucial tackles.
Will be the first name on the teamsheet someday.

    Would start him against Scotland

Dont want to treat it as an opportunity to play an England "B" team as it could hurt us but think Bellingham could handle it.
  • Results are what matters. In that sense it’s the perfect start.

Love how committed Phillips is with some quality in there too. Southgate has got that totally right  today and fair play it worked really well.

I can’t help thinking we need to play an actual LB. I’m not really understanding what Trippier gives us that Chilwell or Shaw can’t.

We need to make sure teams can’t double up on Foden. We need to move the play quicker or overload the right to give him some help. He’s a quality young player but he isn’t Messi.

Mason Mount is quickly becoming one of my favourite footballers. So likeable and his development has been outstanding.

Decent start, a bit to work on but I’d really like to see us go for it against Scotland. Show everyone we are lethal going forwards.

We obviously don’t take our foot off the gas and winning the group will do wonders for team confidence. But nice to remember that with this format where best third places qualify, only a point will be needed from the next two games. Pressure massively off.

We need to bring in players like Grealish for Scotland who are likely to have a much easier time breaking through two deep banks of defenders.

Lots of positives there, Croatia are a good side, not a top side but better than Italy/Belgium faced, we played within ourselves and got the result without any real effort. When we pressed we pressed well and Croatia couldn't handle it.

Opening game win, options deep in the squad not yet used. Keep our heads and crack on planning for Friday now.
  • Enjoyed that.

Southgate, who knew nothing management at 1.00pm when the team was announced, appears to have learnt a lot by 4.00pm

Miraculous turn around by the PE teacher 😂😂😂

Picked the right team for the game and we won.

Sterling best player first half, scored and was our best full back at the end.

Phillips impressed and was my MOTM
That's a bit unfair imo Henry. Yes England won and 3 points is great but there will always be criticism over team selection when a squad has that many class players to choose from. Who is to say that if a few of the others had started we wouldnt have won 5-0 lol

    Good win for England.

Think people need to forget about the Croatia of 2018, three years on this team is a shadow of that side.

We win so few games over 90 minutes in tournaments that we celebrate every win.
Even in Euro 96, from memory we only won 2 games in standard time.
  • Not sure about Kane. I'm sure he will come good, he usually does.
Glad that Sterling did the right thing and went down the middle which led to the goal. Need more movement in the middle with Sterling, Fodan and Mount making runs there as Kane is way too deep.

Would love to see Belligham to start the next match.. Looks a very good player.

If 2 players are marking Foden it means someone else isn't marked.  It's not like we are a one man team.

Trippier is playing at left back for the same reason Ashley Young did in 2018.  Agree with it or not that's Southgate's MO.

Phillips is so underrated by a lot of people in this country. We’ve needed a player like him for a long time.
I think he was underrated by me before this game, he’s been bloody brilliant!

Pleased for Sterling too, will be interesting to see how the media manage to put a negative spin on it in tomorrow’s paper!
Probably because you don’t see a lot of Leeds on TV etc. He’s being doing it for two years at Leeds.
    Never thought I'd read that!
I did think that as I typed 😂 - you know what I mean though.
  • Promising start to the tournament . I didn't think Phillips had that sort of performance in him . Mings stepped up to the mark . So many talented players in this squad.  Happy Days .

We didn’t utilise that though really. For whatever reason we were shutout down our right but didn’t move the ball particularly quickly. There was a lot of backward stuff.

It can be his MO but that doesn’t mean it’s right. Trippier wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t spectacular defensively and didn’t reallt
offer much going forwards. Chilwell is a better LB than Trippier, the RB.
  • As an aside the red tops the players are wearing in the interviews are awful
  • Impressed by the way the interviewees have spoken after the game. Very likeable group.

  • Great to finally kick off a Euros with a win, great to see some fans back, and absolutely fantastic to see Sterling score.

Still think we lacked something, but early signs are good for us to build on.

All 4 of England's right backs are very good 1st choice at 1st, 3rd and 4th in England and 1st in Spain.  Our left backs are also very good, although in lesser numbers. He wants some "delivery" in the team, rightly or wrongly, and that's what you get with Trippier.  You probably don't with Chigwell or Shaw. He will live or die by it, we won't talking about it on the Internet.

This is the Euros, not the world cup, there are no give mes, we needed to not lose this.  We went better.  No team is going to go through the tournament winning 3, 4 or 5 every game.  The opposition are too good.

You need either a 5/5 or 4/6 split between "attackers" and "defenders" and I think the 4/6 worked very well today, you could even argue it was a 5/5 with Philips being more advanced.
  • Really impressed with Philips especially - he was all over the place breaking up play and showed excellent vision to pick out that perfect pass to set up Sterling's goal. Didn't think Walker worked today - although he looked solid defensively, his passing was well off and I'd like to see James given a start next game. Saka or Shaw on the left would allow us to create much more down the left and the pace of Saka especially would terrify teams. Liked Rice today too. Pickford assured when called upon and the CBs looked much more solid than expected. The first 20 minutes we played excellently - such a shame that we didn't manage to get a goal during that period.

Yes they are not the same team that got to the World cup final in many ways but they still have some outstanding players and they know how to win in tournament football. Brilliant to finally start with a win!

Always find it funny that people pick people apart for being critical of managerial choices when we end up winning - it's an emotive game and this forum would be a hell of a lot duller if we all didn't fancy ourselves as armchair pundits who could do a better job if only someone would give us the chance.

Bring on the next game and all the toys that get thrown out of the pram when Trippier plays as part of a front three and Kane gets stuck back on corner taking duty.
  • Trippier looks a player who’s learnt a lot from one of the best managers in the world, and has just won La Liga.

I feel he could be captain material. Seemed to be supportive of other players effects.

still would play him in his natural position though.

Coped especially well with the dumbest questions possible. Who it that interviewer? Hopeless.

Not so much picking a B team, but playing different types of players to suit the game. Scotland will be "up" for it, but don't have the passing skills of the likes of Modric

Shaw (especially) and Chilwell are both fantastic whipping balls from that left hand side.

I’m not saying I expect us to win every game. I fully expect a hard QF game to go against us. My argument is that two quality LBs has to be better than a RB out of position. I didn’t see today the benefit of having Trippier there. All it really did was slow us down a couple of times and made it a lot harder for us to get the play wide.

Having an actual Left footed LB that can open up the channel would be fantastic. It’d mean we could manage those 5/5 splits a lot better.

It could but we could have also won the game 1-0 through a Trippier set piece.

We never really looked like conceding, on another day we could have scored 2 or 3.  You don't need your full backs being over lapping, especially with the attacking talent we had on the pitch and the lack of quality center backs we have.
