Started the season really well but didn't build on it. Disappointing all round. Not worried if he's in the squad for his versatility etc but not bothered if we let him go (assuming we replace him).
One of the few that’s enjoyable to watch. I’d keep him. Would shine with better players around him, but is exposed when playing in a very average side.
It’s a tough one. I like him but the second half of this season he’s really not performed.
That being said, having a player who can cover a few positions as back up is useful over a long 46 match season. A major problem is he’s playing regularly as part of the staring XI when he should only be a squad player (if at all) for a team chasing promotion.
If he was in contract I'd be ok with him staying, but he isn't. The reality is we're very unlikely to move Egbo on with a year left on his deal, so the question with Clare becomes whether you would want our two right backs next season to be Clare and Egbo again. The answer should be no.
I’d keep him if he’s a back up CDM, but I can’t deal with watching another season of him at RB. He’s positionally awful, constantly tucks in and fails to track runners. I don’t really blame him as it’s not his natural position, but we should be looking to sign a proper RB this summer.

Two consecutive clubs have signed him a midfielder, then shifted him to right back/right centre back. That doesn't suggest that he's very good in the middle

Problem is he’s not really a natural midfielder at this level either. If he’s positionally awful and doesn’t track runners he’s not what we need as a DM.

If you think he's bad at right back you must have missed him in midfield
I won't be surprised, he's a utility player that we've used predominantly as a right back but he can also play centre mid or as part of a back 3. He's not our best player by any stretch, but he's also not our worst and I can see him being used as a player that fills multiple roles as backup
He has some great attributes and often finds himself in acres of space on the right thanks to his pace, but he can't pick out the pass or cross to end the move.
He can't see the pass, either. When the winger makes a great run beyond the line ahead of him or a midfielder runs forward into space... He can only rotate backwards and go sideways.
And his game management is the most frustrating of all. He commits unnecessary fouls, loses concentration and has cost goals.
Despite all this, I still don't groan when I see him on the team sheet. He seems like a rough diamond and was fantastic at the start of the season, but I don't know whether he can be honed.

I have some great attributes, but i'll never make it a porn star. Can you see my point?
Offering him a new deal would be a good indicator of our aim for the coming season
I hope our season isn't overly influenced by who our reserve right back is. He ended up playing 40 games because Egbo, Kane and Sessegnon all had knack of one form or another and Penny was just, more than a bit, shit.

Think this goes back to @Garrymanilow 's point. Egbo still under contract (plus IMO the better full back) so would we want our two primary right back options to be Egbo and Clare again? Probably not. Let's aim for someone better than Egbo and have Egbo be the "reserve" right back.

I'd be happy with Egbo as first choice and Clare as backup there. I rate Egbo and we've got a lot of other priorities compared to right back (left back, centre back, replacing JRS, upfront....)

Ideally we can sign a new first choice left back, plus Sessegnon and then those 2 to complete 4 full back options. That would mean Clare would be 3rd choice right back if everyone was fit, but still useful to have him in the squad as he can fill in multiple roles (CB in a 3, RB, CM, winger) but means we aren’t relying on him for 35 games starting at right back anymore
Good athlete, but not such a good football brain. Switches off and is positionally not great, which has cost us numerous goals. For a supposed midfielder who's been converted to defence, he offers very little attacking end product as an overlapping fullback. We all see things differently, but I have no idea what would drive anyone to say he's been one of our better performers. It's all well and good being versatile, but if you're a bit shit in every position, is that versatility really that useful?
You can't fault the lads' effort and he seems and nice fella, but, football wise, he's not for me. I hope he is released and I'm confident we could sign someone a bit better even on a budget, and if we don't that'll say more about our recruitment than Sean Clare.

Egbo didn't look great post injury imo
Agreed. It's a bit of a concern. Pre-injury he bombed up and down the touchline for fun, but he didn't get forward very much at all after he came back into the side. Hopefully he's just easing back in, and a pre-season will fix things, but he wouldn't be the first very athletic player never quite be himself again after a bad injury.
He's not that good. We're mid table L1 and I don't think he's good enough to start in our team now. If we were in a relegation battle I still wouldn't want him, so that makes him L2 level by my reckoning.

I think Clare is given way too much of a hard time. An honest pro, who puts his lot in, is willing to bomb forward and back to the 90th and has a trick or two. Some defensive lapses, yes, but the same applies to the entire back four (Ness probably the least guilty) and same could be said of some of the midfielders we would be willing to keep eg Fraser, who has lost the ball in dangerous positions a few times this season. I genuinely believe that if we can strengthen the spine and its depth for that matter, Sean or Manny will be of little concern next season. Or put it another way, if renewing Clare freed up more budget to get a box to box mid better than Albie, a suitable replacement for JRS etc, I would bite their hand off.
