  • Started the season really well but didn't build on it. Disappointing all round. Not worried if he's in the squad for his versatility etc but not bothered if we let him go (assuming we replace him).
  • It’s a tough one. I like him but the second half of this season he’s really not performed.

That being said, having a player who can cover a few positions as back up is useful over a long 46 match season. A major problem is he’s playing regularly as part of the staring XI when he should only be a squad player (if at all) for a team chasing promotion.
  • So the majority of fans want Clare to sign a new contract as long as he only plays occasionally.
  • Provided he’s not on megabucks he’s defo worth keeping for versatility
  • I think hes been one of the better players this year, definitely keep.

    That’s not saying much
  • I’d keep him if he’s a back up CDM, but I can’t deal with watching another season of him at RB. He’s positionally awful, constantly tucks in and fails to track runners. I don’t really blame him as it’s not his natural position, but we should be looking to sign a proper RB this summer.

Two consecutive clubs have signed him a midfielder, then shifted him to right back/right centre back. That doesn't suggest that he's very good in the middle

Problem is he’s not really a natural midfielder at this level either. If he’s positionally awful and doesn’t track runners he’s not what we need as a DM.

If you think he's bad at right back you must have missed him in midfield

I would be surprise if he gets a new deal...
I won't be surprised, he's a utility player that we've used predominantly as a right back but he can also play centre mid or as part of a back 3. He's not our best player by any stretch, but he's also not our worst and I can see him being used as a player that fills multiple roles as backup

He has some great attributes and often finds himself in acres of space on the right thanks to his pace, but he can't pick out the pass or cross to end the move.

He can't see the pass, either. When the winger makes a great run beyond the line ahead of him or a midfielder runs forward into space... He can only rotate backwards and go sideways.

And his game management is the most frustrating of all. He commits unnecessary fouls, loses concentration and has cost goals.

Despite all this, I still don't groan when I see him on the team sheet. He seems like a rough diamond and was fantastic at the start of the season, but I don't know whether he can be honed.

Offering him a new deal would be a good indicator of our aim for the coming season

I have some great attributes, but i'll never make it a porn star. Can you see my point?

I hope our season isn't overly influenced by who our reserve right back is.  He ended up playing 40 games because Egbo, Kane and Sessegnon all had knack of one form or another and Penny was just, more than a bit, shit.

  • I would let him go. He's average at best so may as well take a punt on someone else who may help us get nearer the top end of the table

    No I can't. It's too small, clearly.

Think this goes back to @Garrymanilow 's point. Egbo still under contract (plus IMO the better full back) so would we want our two primary right back options to be Egbo and Clare again? Probably not. Let's aim for someone better than Egbo and have Egbo be the "reserve" right back.

I'd be happy with Egbo as first choice and Clare as backup there.  I rate Egbo and we've got a lot of other priorities compared to right back (left back, centre back, replacing JRS, upfront....)
Ideally we can sign a new first choice left back, plus Sessegnon and then those 2 to complete 4 full back options. That would mean Clare would be 3rd choice right back if everyone was fit, but still useful to have him in the squad as he can fill in multiple roles (CB in a 3, RB, CM, winger) but means we aren’t relying on him for 35 games starting at right back anymore

Egbo didn't look great post injury imo

Agreed. It's a bit of a concern. Pre-injury he bombed up and down the touchline for fun, but he didn't get forward very much at all after he came back into the side. Hopefully he's just easing back in, and a pre-season will fix things, but he wouldn't be the first very athletic player never quite be himself again after a bad injury.

Hopefully a full preseason will help.
