It’s back!
The 2021-22 Prediction League is here again, welcoming back old competitors and any newbies who want to prove that they know a thing or two about football. If you’re new to the Prediction League, all you have to do is pick three games from the fixtures listed below and choose the score. You get three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. The full rules are at the bottom of this post. The prize is the glory of winning this prestigious competition. Just ask @redlanered how life has changed since winning last season.
As usual, the top 100-odd competitors gain entry to the
prestigious Prediction Knock Out Cup, which starts in January 2022.
Rule Change
But, first, an announcement of a major rule change! In the past, you have scored five bonus points for three correct score predictions. This system has meant a small number of competitors scoring 14 points, making a huge difference to the league tables. Indeed, I was one of the beneficiaries last season. This season, you will only score one bonus point, making three perfect predictions worth a meagre 10 points. Yes, I know it’s tough, but the Committee voted unanimously in favour of this change (actually, I was the only one that turned up to the meeting).
The rules
1.
Each week you should predict the score of up to
three games that are listed on the Prediction League fixtures thread. If you
pick more than three games, only the first three will count. The thread listing
the games will usually appear by the end of Wednesday each week. As games may
take place on any day between Friday and Monday, you must ensure that you only
pick games that have not kicked off. If you pick a game after it has kicked
off, you will score zero points, regardless of the outcome.
2. If you pick a Cup game of any description or a game where extra time/penalties may take place, the score at the end of normal time counts.
3. If a game is abandoned, the score at the time of the abandonment counts.
4. If a game you choose is postponed, it will only count if it is played by the end of Monday; otherwise it will score zero points.
5. If a game is postponed, you can choose another game by posting your alternative selection.
6. When posting your predictions, please try to avoid any chat/banter with others (I have to strip that stuff out manually before my software program works out the scores). Also, try to avoid jokey team names such as ‘MK Dunces’ (again, I have to edit this manually).
7. Each week the scores you achieve will be posted, usually by Tuesday, with the League Tables and other statistics.
8. You can miss up to three weeks over the course of the season. In this case, you will score the average (rounded to the nearest whole number) scored by those entering that week. Exceptionally, for the last week of the season, this dispensation is not allowed.

This week's fixtures
Right, let’s get started with the fixtures for Week 1. There are no Premier League games, so there is a good selection of Championship and League One games plus a generous helping of four Guest fixtures rather than the usual one. Good luck, everyone.
