Hurricane Ida

Hurricane Ida is about to make landfall in Louisiana give or take 10-15 minutes. Recorded wind speeds of 150-155mph, it’s expected to rival Hurricane Katrina in 2005…
Evacuation all along the coastline has been taking place over the last two to three days. Wind damage will be significant, not to mention a large storm surge of up to 16ft that will put many properties underwater.

Hoping that fatalities are kept to a minimum.

Hopefully lessons have been learned from Katrina (and other similar events) in the intervening years.0

Probably not.0

They say so but only time will tell!0

Sure I’ve seen tv programs showing that they still haven’t cleared everything up following Katrina…i pray the impact is minimised0

I’ve been there twice in recent years, lots of flood defences put in since Katrina. But I guess you just can’t stop nature. Fingers crossed for everyone there.2

I went to a conference in New Orleans in 1998 in late Sep. We were having a good time then gradually became aware of approaching hurricane Georges. Saw people boarding up their premises and the mayor on TV saying “we’ll keep the highways open as long as we can but we can’t guarantee the safety of the city.” On the Sat eve we had a big gala dinner - 400 Brits all dressed up, police outriders as we walked the streets in our (unseasonal) Mardi Gras finery. At the time I had fleeting thoughts of the Titanic “and the band played on”.
Went down for breakfast next morning to be greeted by signs about evacuation. The families didn’t want to go despite being offered priority. So we took up places on the bus to Houston - two busses of 50 pax each, when there were 400 at the conference. We could pack one case between two - had to leave everything else behind. Never have material possessions felt less important. We were four hours into the journey when our coach driver proudly announced that we were beyond the swamps and safe.In the end Georges veered away and those who chose to stay made it back safely a few days’ later. I still shudder now about Katrina and how close we were to that devastation. The saddest of all is how predictable it was for a city below sea level with inadequate defences.Stay safe tonight, New Orleans.7 -
CNN 30-50mph in New Orleans now with gusts to 70. All power is out, according to news reports. I am sure flooding will be bad by the morning.

So many American houses seem to be made from wood!0

Yup - most US houses are constructed with wood - all sorts of issues why - the weather being one of them.0
