Turning into a sad day this one.

Might just be my perception but what I liked about him, sometimes actors do well out of a series or character that makes them, they then think they’re above it, turn their nose up about it etc

Never got that from him, the opposite in fact. Seemed to positively love Boycie, his double act with Marlene and played up to it all the time. can imagine the times he ‘played’ Boycie for a photo or phone video with fans went well into the thousands.

How they ever got through filming the seance without fits of giggles I will never know

One of my best mates got John Challis to film a birthday message for his Dad about a year ago.

He went the whole hog with it, suit and tie - the full works.

    Such sad news RIP
  • Met him a few years back, he happily chatted to us for a bit then did a daft video on my mate's phone where he did the Boycey laugh and then critiqued our attempts, "rubbish, what are you doing, you sound like a woodpecker..." etc.

Really nice bloke, could have easily told us to piss off and leave us alone but he was a gent.

    RIP.

RIP, played a superb role in my favourite TV show of all time.
  • One of the first references in OFAH is that he was a car dealer from Lewisham Grove.  Does such a place exist?

The thing that made only fools and horse so good was the quality of actor they had in to makes these characters so real , when you look at the likes of Lyndhurst , Sullivan , Lloyd Pack and Challice all classically trained actors just so good at acting. RIP

“For god’s sake Marlene, I might be able to con people into buying my cars, I might be able convince people you conceived and gave birth in 7 days flat but how in the earth am I going to be able to convince people his grandad was Louis Armstrong!”

“Put in him on the backseat and let him sleep it off….he’s the bloody driver!”

    RIP John

Oh man this one is sad

I was lucky enough to bump into him down Margate and he was an absolute joy. Made time for me and my mate and fully played up to being Boycie, took the piss right out of the pair of us and as I shook his ham hock-like paw to thank him and said "You are a really good actor John, love you in Benidorm too" he told me he hardly ever gets called John and happily answers to Boycie

"Marlene, get that bloody dog out of the aquarium!"

    Rest in peace John Challis
  • Sad news, on top of Greavsie this morning.

I was trying to find the exact text of my favourite Boycie quote, came across this which has a load of them (my favourite is the one about the Trotters rolling up to medieval Peckham in a stolen Zephyr and nicking the maypole).

Saw him do his one man show at my local theatre in 2016. Was a great night and he had time for every single person afterwards.

    RIP

Watching Boycie in Belgrade now and it shows what a fantastic man he was, doing his laugh for people so they can record it and even at the distillery when the guy was calling him Boycie the whole time rather than John and he was absolutely fine with it, im sure there are some actors who would have said thats my character name not real name lol.

But it just shows what everyone says about him, that he was such a down to earth man and a fantastic human.

    R.I.P John

    RIP…..John…..RIP.

Oh and of course, thanks for all those laughs and smiles you put on the faces of countless millions.
For that alone, it was a life very well spent.

A wonderful man who made millions of peeps happy by entertainment and kind deeds.
    Rest in Peace, John.

  • For some actors, being so well known for a role must be annoying at times. The fact John played up to the Boycie role for the adoring fans, when recognised, must surely be that he was comfortable with the recognition and appreciative of the fondness associated with his most famous role.

For me, Only Fools and Horses is an iconic series and the cast are in my heart and that of millions of fans. Boycie will remain a character that is one of John's most loved roles. A legend of the show that will live on in the endless repeats.

    Goodnight Boycie RIP

  • I'd forgotten that John Challis was also in Doctor Who back in the 70s, playing a thuggish character in the excellent Tom Baker story The Seeds of Doom
