  • totally agree with those sentiments about neill , he played for millsmall , enough said
  • Don't care really about Lucas Neil......he merely decided that £70,000 each week in the bank was a better deal than a mere £35,000 a week.

I suppose he's only trying to secure his financial future while he can, in a career that could suddenly prematurely end at any time

If an employer offered you the chance to double/treble your wages overnight, then most people on here would no doubt bite his hand off.

But then most on here don't get the chance to be a hero in the eyes of myriads of fans.
Or simply do a job that they love doing.
  • talk of big cutbacks at Wham this summer:

  • He might have had the chance to play for Liverpool, but does anyone think he'd ever have been a regular starter? I can't see it, he'd have been a squad player and at best been a regular on the subs bench.
  • West Ham owners are suffering a big financial meltdown at home - hence the need to make drastic cutbacks at West Ham. I've heard that they are in serious financial difficulties due to a lack of cash flow and a 90% fall in their investments.

  • New owners wanted for West Scam, before they go into administration.

Fair enough, but at least have the balls to be up front about it rather than take the piss out of the fans by lying through your teeth about why you chose one club over the other.
In actual fact, some footballers (like Darren Bent, for example) have put their career prospects before money when deciding on a move.
For a player to turn down Liverpool in favour of West Ham is just madness. The whole point of a move is to better yourself and play at the very highest level not to simply fill your bank balance. He should have had the guts and confidence to force himself into a Liverpool regular and not opt for an easy spot at West Ham. IMHO giving up the chance of playing in a Champions League final is simply unforgiveable on a footballing basis. He might retire a very rich man but my guess is that he will always regret turning down that move and the chance on nights like Liverpool had this season against Inter and Chelsea.
  • Of course, most of us on here have got a cynical opinion (including me!), on why Neill chose West Ham rather than Liverpool.

Maybe a couple of other points came into his mind:

    1) Even though born in Sydney, he spent 6 years at Millwall and obviously living and socialising in London.
Maybe after 6 years living in Blackburn meant that a move to Liverpool, and having to stay in the north didn't appeal to him in the same way as a return back to London?

    2)How about this one:

He broke the leg of Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher when his trailing leg caught that of the Liverpool player in the fifth game of the 2003-04 season in a tackle at Ewood Park. Carragher, a popular home-grown Liverpool player, was sidelined for six months and the incident sparked a war of words between Gérard Houllier and Graeme Souness after Neill and his manager did not apologise for 48 hours.

Maybe there is still bad feeling from Carragher and other longer serving players at Liverpool, let alone reaction against him from the crowd - Neill perhaps wasn't too sure that he'd be welcome?

Just pointing out that maybe there are other contributary reasons to turning down a move to Liverpool.

    PS: I'm still cynical ........
