Gaming laptops

My 11 year old has been saving up and wants to buy a laptop for gaming on.

Mainly plays the like of fortnite and fifa on switch and PC.

any recommendations for a decent laptop in the 500 quid range that are good for gaming in addition to just doing homework on ?

  • I think you'd struggle to find a dedicated gaming laptop for £500 unfortunately. You'd get more bang for your buck if you got a desktop PC if you have the room
  • Decent Graphics card for a Gaming PC / Laptop is going to cost you around £200-£500 alone
  • 3 year bump for this - my boy stuck with his desktop in the end, but now my younger son who is turning 12, wants to buy a desktop pc.

Can anyone tell me, does this seem a decent bit of kit for the price ?
Again for playing fortnite, rainbow siege etc etc

The price isn’t too bad but the power supply manufacturer isn’t named which is concerning as it could be low quality and if it fails it could take out other components with it.

This ones a bit dearer but it comes with better quality psu and ram. Corsair is a known name for power supplys.

  • Genuinely recommend building one yourself.

It's very simple to do and tons of video guides online.

I have a PC that if bought pre built would be c£2k and I have spent £1300.

This would destroy those other PC builds above, but you could save on a simpler CPU, case and Motherboard to get closer to £1k.

£700 saved? I spent £2100 in January on a custom build from Overlockers UK and i worked out that asking them to build it was about £150 more than putting it together myself. Also comes with a 3 year warranty on all parts.

Yeah genuinely - Though my PC has been improved over time. If I were to build it without sales deals etc it would probably still be £200-£250 cheaper which when it takes about 2 hours to build one isn't too bad.
  • My current gaming PC would have cost me £700 more if I had it pre-built (5800X3D/32GBRam/4070 Super/Water cooled goodness and full LED too), but thankfully I actually love building PCs and kinda wish I could do it more!
  • Yeah, I am not gonna build one.
way outside my comfort zone no matter how easy it is on youtube.

Have messaged them about the power supply manufacturer Dazzler so will see what they say

These use various Power Supplies, depending on stock.  They will be either GameMax,CIT,VIDA or IONZ 500W 80+ Bronze

are any of these worrysome ?

    Thanks
  • I have never heard of any of them, avoid.

Would just put a recommendation out for Lenovo Legion gaming laptops for build quality, I got the 'Pro 5i' model, Gen 8, 16" with an RTX 4060 graphics card about a year and a half ago.

Tips I can remember from my research at the time, plus experience with it so far, is:
    • Intel i7 to i9 is a pricey upgrade for the performance increase
    • RTX 4060 to 4080 is probably your graphics card choice, more efficient to spend money here than on processor or RAM (see below)
    • Found the bigger SSD option was useful as games are taking up more and more space
    • No, or extremely negligible, gaming benefit of going over 16GB RAM
    • Get a laptop stand for ventilation & link to a monitor or that thing will cook, and don't expect any battery life without the charger in (which basically makes it a more portable desktop!)
    • Gaming performance also non-existent without the power supply in
  • Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a gaming desktop PC, please.

My son wants to move from a PS5 to PC gaming. He mainly plays Rocket League, fairly good standard, is ranked in the top 100 on console.

His budget is between £1,000 and £1,500. We also have a Costco membership if that helps with options.

Palicomp recommended the following PC—would this be a good choice, or overkill for his needs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
