Just had F&C tonight, large cod, added a saveloy and it came to 16 quid ffs. Used to be cheap working class food when I was a kid. Still, was bloody lovely though. Saving grace was that we could share it and it was enough between us.
3 years ago I said to the kids we would get fish and chips after every Charlton win. I thought it could get costly but we actually had to reduce the target to when Charlton get at least a point.

That was our household ritual, win or lose in the early sixties. Dad me and my brother would pick up fish and chips and get home just in time to watch Dr Who in black and white.
Any recommendations for a good chippy in Bromley.......more the Sundridge Park end. There is one in College Road but seems very expensive & shut every time I try there 🙄. Others I've tried are the one in Bromley Hill & another in Baring Road (not far from the South Circular). Around us there only seems to be kebab shops or chicken shops. None do decent chips 😡.
In Eden Park I would highly recommend Beluga. Some of the best fish and chips I have ever had and the family that run it are really lovely too. It is very difficult to beat as a chippy.
11 years ago, I used to be able to get two pints of lager in my running club, get the bus home and still get cod and chips all out of a tenner. (Marino Fish Bar, Welling for evidence!). It was a once every two month treat.
Nowadays, since moving we use Village Fish & Chips, Petts Wood - Cod £10, Chips £4.50. If I went for a couple of pints in the Daylight beforehand, I wouldnt have much change out of £30!
Have to say, Villlage Fish & Chips is brilliant, phone up and collect service. Regularly have skate on the menu if I fancy a change from Cod.

You are paying Petts Wood prices so not a true reflection, £4.50 for a portion of chips is a liberty
I am not interested in fish, but like chips. However I do home made and this is my system. Bear in mind a portion of chips anywhere local lands in the region of £3. First an Gino D’Acampo air ’fryer’ from ASDA for around £39(re useable). Then a large baking potato from Sainsbury’s for around 25-40p. Peel potato and cut into chips, not too thick, not too thin. Soak cut chips in cold water in a mixing bowl. Rinse and wash chips again, and lay chips on a clean t-towel to dry. Set air fryer to start at about 190. Dry mixing bowl, and chuck dried chips in it. Pour a very small amount of oil in the bowl, enough to make the seasoning stick. Add generous helping of Sainsbury’s chip seasoning, plus some paprika, some ground black pepper, some salt, and the magic ingredient some cornflower. Use a spoon to turn and mix well into the chips so all surfaces are covered and sticky, don’t worry about thoroughness but the chips will become a kind of reddy brown.. Cook in the warmed air fryer in five minute spells. Shake and mix up the chips on each inspection. Use a sharp knife to test when cooked, depending on the size of the chips you cut it should take 15 to 20 minutes. Whilst chips cook, clear up stuff. Eat chips when done.
I know reading this feels like a faff, but it doesn’t take much longer than going down the chip shop and bringing chips home, and after the purchase of the air fryer, the oil and the seasonings (all of which can last a long while) you’re paying around 30p for a decent portion of hot fresh home cooked chips rather than £3, with for me the additional bonus of the chips not affected by oil used to cook fish.

Wasn't keen on Beluga when we tried it (was our regular place for fish & chips when the Greek couple owned it prior to changing hands) I don't like the skin left on the fish and they wouldn't remove it for me.
We use Blue Planet at the end of Eden Park Avenue. Their grilled fish as an alternative to battered is lovely.

Forget the Grillery mate. It’s gone way Downhill.
Bromley Hill fish bar (which you already mentioned) is easily the best chippy in the area. It is Trumpy though.

Paid £21.50 in Rainham, Kent on Saturday night for 'large' cod, 'medium' cod and large chips.
During the week they do old age pension cod and chips some lunchtimes for less than a tenner each which looking at other chip shops in Kent is competitive from what I can see.

Thats a disgrace, especially as there are no good chippies in Rainham. Some class pubs and good places to eat but no decent chippies. Horribly you have to go to Gillingham then Rochester to find a good chippy worthy of your pension
Fish and chips has to be cooked in beef dripping it makes a world of difference. Two best chippies I have used are Elite in Lincoln, or Number 1 in Cromer.
I now only air fry chips at home in beef dripping, takes it to the next level.
Also need a cup of tea , bread and butter and gravy

Isn't that what Harry Ramsden use? I make you right regarding the beef dripping, their fish and chips I had as a child in Blackpool I can still taste now

Battering fish in batter and deep frying it is probably why we have an (underserved) reputation around the world of having bad food.
However I do home made and this is my system.

Everyone we spoke to locally said Magpie & Trenchers were the good ones!
