Just had a look at the as it stands knockout rounds, if things go as predicted England if they get themselves into gear will never have a better chance to get to the final.
Really?!, just had a look... Last 16 we will play Mexico in Mexico. Quarterfinal will be Brazil, semi final will be Argentina and then we have Germany in the final 60 years on from 1966.

I must get on my William Hill account and bung a grand on this, easy money.

Netherlands v Morocco is a banger of a last 32 tie. That could quite easily have been a quarter final really, one good team is going home very early.

Hopefully the Dutch will win and progress.

Doubt i'll see England/UK host a world cup in my lifetime. We just wouldn't be able to line FIFAs pockets enough.
I would guess we could probably be one of the few countries that could host a 64 team competition. We have/will have the key ingredients in stadiums, public transport to get to those stadiums, sufficient accommodation in hotels, hostels, B&B, Airbnb and, in the summertime a lot of purpose built student accommodation sitting empty.

FIFA World Cup 2026 regulations handbook, annex C lists all 495 pre-determined combinations.

Only 51 of those original 495 combinations are still possible according to this:

Take one example from row 50 of the table of the wikipedia article...

    If the eight best teams come from groups: B, E, F, G, H, J, K, L then

    1A v 3E (Mexico v Ecuador),
    1B v 3J (Switzerland v Algeria),
    1D v 3B (USA v Bosnia),
    1E v 3F (Germany v Sweden),
    1G v 3H (Egypt v Saudi Arabia),
    1I v 3G (France v Iran),
    1K v 3L (Portugal v Ghana),
    1L v 3K (England v DR Congo)

Of the 51 remaining possible combinations, the winners of England's group would be matched with

    DR Congo (3rd K) 25 times
    Senegal (3rd I) 13 times
    Ecuador (3rd E) 8 times
    Algeria (3rd J) 4 times

Catching up. Not sure when teams will learn to deal with the Dutch plan A, B and C - get wide and drill it across the box.
