So bizarre saying both Germany and Netherlands out on the same day, so early. Congrats to Paraguay and Morocco though who both deserved it for different reasons.
Draw has opened up significantly for the French in that quarter in the space of a few hours. Assuming they beat Sweden, gone from Germany -> Netherlands to get to a semi final to now Sweden -> Paraguay -> Morocco instead.3 -
Two of the weirdest penalty saves I’ve seen. Primarily this one where the goalie saved it on his feet but 3/4 of the way across the goal - so far over he had to reach back towards the middle of the goal to save it and almost couldn’t get his hand to it. And secondly the save from the Dutch keeper that he somehow managed to then back heel in, technically scoring an own goal in a penalty shootout.I think a lot of it had to do with the stuttering run ups. I get the concept but goalies are wising up and have counter measures now. Plus it has the weird effect of making the taker fixate on the keeper and forget to look where they are aiming which I’m certain is a big reason for what feels like a recent increase in penalties being off target.
There’s no need for the complication. The taker has always held all the cards. Pick a corner and concentrate on hitting it hard and true into that corner. Do that it doesn’t matter where the keeper dives because he won’t reach it.12 -

Timber's penalty for the Dutch was one of the worst i've ever seen. Along the ground and about 3 yards wide, not sure how you even miss the target by that much. Also no idea what Summerville was doing, how did he not look up and see the keeper had moved over to that side.
Great night of football though.
Pleased that Brazil went through, i always feel a world cup is better if they get to the later rounds.
Germany losing a shoot out for the first time since Euro 1976 is incredible.
Morocco deservedly beating the Dutch, they had so much of the play and Verbruggen made a couple of unbelievable saves to keep the Netherlands in it.0 -
Hadn’t they established that the goalkeeper always went early, so a stutter was a decent insurance policy. If he missed (unusual even with a stutter), then a decent chance they’d get a retake. I agree it’s annoying and I don’t like them, but it was a clever approach.Stu_of_Kunming said:

Love the DR Congo blue kit, the shade of blue in particular. I can even forgive the pattern fade which for some reason seems to be paying homage to the uterus.
Made by our old friends at Umbro, and would happily see them do our kits again rather than the banal identikits from Nike.

Penalty shootouts are still the cruelest way to end a tournament. They create incredible moments, but I always feel for the players who miss.3

Also quite pleased Japan went out after reading that their goalscorer Sano was part of a gang rape a couple of years ago but paid the victim off so it never went to court. The Japan FA excused it as a "personal mistake". Not exactly what i'd call it, scumbag.3 -

Personally I don't think one of the best strikers in the tournament needs such nonsense, it will cost us sooner or later.0 -
Morocco may be my favourite team to watch. Cafu is my favourite right back in my lifetime but Hakimi, practically a centre forward at times, may be slowly taking over there.2

The expanded World Cup is going to create even more unpredictable results, which is part of the fun. It also reminds me how difficult it is to predict an entire league season without dropping points. I said this yesterday we have never had a better chance of reaching the final, out of those games the easiest one imo is Brazil as they just look poor I think we would destroy them on the break. I think DR Congo will be turgid and we hopefully get through on pens as I cant see us breaking them down, Mexico we should normally beat but altitude, heat, home nation support and the Azteca well it will be toughPelling1993 said:
