Not a massive fan of rugby but have just seen that Gloucester Lock, Ed Slater has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Ed is a fellow addick and someone I follow on social media, he regularly tweets about the club and if he or his family visit this forum id like to wish you all the best with this battle and stay strong.

As above, I've got admiration for Ed as a rugby player. Takes no prisoners, I had no idea he was a Charlton fan

Wish you all the best Ed if you read this

It's the worst disease, he and everyone who knows him have my deepest sympathies.

There is so much about it on the local news up here because of Rob Borrows, the superhuman efforts of Kevin Sinfield, and Stephen Darby.  The must be a link to contact sport?  Doddie Weir, Mongo McMicheal and Fernando Rickson have all been inflicted with this terrible disease as well.

    Tragic news.

Ed Slater was an extremely talented second row forward who has been unlucky to play in an era when England have had an abundance of talented contenders for the two available slots in the team.

I wish him well and hope that the medics make some meaningful progress towards finding a cure and or alleviating the most distressing symptoms during the progression of his illness.

Really sad news. At least he will have the full support of the rugby community. Good to see the club tweeted him a message of support 👍
  • Very good to see Leicester Tigers & Gloucester will now play for the “Slater Cup” when they play each other, Tigers won today so now the holders, rugby does these things so well. Stay strong Ed.

Motor neurone disease is a shocking disease and seeing the amazing 3 lads of Dodie Weir pay their respect to their dad in his favourite attire was inspirational and they seem to have his strength and spirit; also their Mother must be a rock to the boys, as they are to her.

To Ed Slater and all sufferers of this bastard disease may progress continue to be made in the fight against MND.

Ed has just been on BBC Breakfast. It is so sad to see his rapid deterioration in the last couple of years to the extent that he is now wheelchair bound and his speech is markedly slurred.

Ed is raising funds, with the help of one of his best mates, Billy Twelvetrees who is doing a bike ride next Monday, for the charities that support sufferers of MND, a bike ride for 350 miles in 24 hours with other members of their group, two years on from when he and Billy did a similar thing. MND is a bastard of a disease but the most remarkable thing is how positive Ed is still about life despite all that it has thrown at him. Well done Billy too. Their attitude to what has happened is really humbling.

Eds going to be at the Bolton game.
His son is a mascot & he can't wait to see him go out with the team.
    Wonderful 🥰❤️
  • Given all that Ed is going through at the moment, one has to step back and think that our plight has to be a bit of a distraction for him. Thankfully (and some of us could learn a thing or two from him in that respect), he hasn't lost his sense of humour or irony:

"Being a Charlton fan is possibly one of the most depressing forms of existence someone can choose for themselves...#cafc
    *I will be watching."

"If you could give your 5 year old self advice, what would you say?" "If you ever get a Charlton Athletic shirt, just give it to someone you don't like at school."

  • Yep, I had a great exchange with him after the game last night.
    He's such a great guy.
