Quoted this morning that 55000 of the 125000 bomber command lost their lives in WW2. Almost 50% chance of not making it back. These are real heroes not those putting the ball in the net or putting a golf ball. I salute you.
I saw him interviewed on the news. He came across as a true gentleman and like so many who display such bravery, more interested in emphasising the teamwork and camaraderie of his colleagues than taking any credit himself. RIP Johnny.
If you ever get the chance to watch the BBC virtual reality bomber raid, take it. It's based on the radio coverage of a raid on Berlin that was recorded in a Lancaster and brought to life using VR, it's very powerful and emotionally charged. The nearest any of us could ever get to understanding what these men put themselves through.
