  • Steven Finn has announced his retirement from cricket, after being out injured for ages. I'm sure he'll go straight into the media, as he's been excellent when on TMS and TV.
  • Matthew Mott has said he's considering trying to tempt Ben Stokes out of ODI retirement for the World Cup (and is considering picking Archer and hoping he's fit).

I honestly think we should just let both recuperate etc and hopefully treat their injuries properly rather than rushing either back.

I think from the sounds of it archer won't play test cricket again, i fear.

No, I don't think so either.

But then I wouldn't rush him back now in the hope that he can have a longer limited over career too.

It wouldn't surprise me if he gives up ODIs as well if he can't get some sort of endurance back. T20 leagues are where the money is, and by just bowling 4 overs a game he can extend his career much longer.

one of those that had their mental health destroyed by andy flower and i don't think ashley giles dealt with him very well, either.

Ollie Robinson doing Ollie Robinson things. being reported that he has left his fiancé 3 months before the wedding and is now with a Tik Tok influencer. apparently it only came out when other England players saw him with her during the ashes....
Robinson is one selfish individual who only thinks about one thing. Ollie Robinson. I feel so sorry for his ex fiancé but I'm sure she will learn that she is better off without him given everything that is and isn't in the public domain about Robinson. The person I feel sorry for most though is his two year old daughter. For having Ollie Robinson as a father.

No wonder he has a bad back
And a good job that he isn't on some sort of retainer whether he looks after his body or not

Played an underrated part in that famous 2010/11 away ashes win. Was key in the first couple of tests even if he did lose his place to Tremlett at the end of the series.

Something went wrong with him at some point (possibly mentally) and he never quite fulfilled the potential he showed when he first appeared on the scene but an excellent player and great career. All the best Steve.

It was Bresnan who took his place. Indeed we had great bowling depth that series, considering Broad went home early injured.

The Graeme Smith/bail knocking incident seemed to ruin his career.

Both Bres and Trem were playing the last 2 games of the series.

Tremlett replaced the injured Broad for the 3rd Test. Then Finn was replaced by Bresnan in the 4th.

Finn did a good pre Ashes interview this summer about that, and how at the time it tarred his pleasure at England's win.

  • Judging Ollie Robinson's personal life is a bit harsh in my opinion. Nobody other than the parties involved are aware of what happens behind closed doors. Maybe they haven't been getting on and we're only going ahead with the wedding because of their daughter and maybe he realised that now was the best time to get out and save everyone from heartache?

There is probably a large element of truth in the comments above but at the moment it's based on gossip rather than fact and calling someone out based on gossip isn't fair!

Always thought he got a raw deal, he was on tour and obviously had problems, which no one in the army of experts attached to the team seemed to be able to tackle. Pretty sure it was the same tour that poor old Trotty had a breakdown as well.

Yep, looks like he's decided to move onto the next phase of his career in the commentary box.

He never really recovered from having his action tinkered with the by the ECB coaches. They tried to turn him into a fast medium length and line bowler who went for about 2/3 runs an over and could fit into a four man bowling line up.

He should have been allowed to just bowl, go for four an over and take wickets. Maybe if he'd come through in the current era that's what he would have been left to do.

At his best he was a 90MPH bowler who when the radar was working would get a bit of seam movement and lift off a length.

Flower wouldn’t let him have time off to work on his action/approach to the stumps and brought him on tour where he didn’t play. Ashley Giles then threw him under the bus by calling him up to the ODI series immediately after and then sending him home telling everyone that he’d lost his head. Just a shambolic winter.
  • Telegraph reporting that Stokes has agreed to come out of ODI retirement for the One day world cup.

TBH i dont think this is actually a good move for him or England. Chances are he is only going to be able to play as a batsman, we have loads of competition for those roles and as good as he is in thos big game moments I dont think he is the best option in the middle order. Let the man rest, have surgery if he needs it and go again for the winter test tours.
  • I'm conflicted about it - Stokes is a big game player who can win a game on his own but I think ultimately I'd rather have him for the test tour in India and play Livingstone/Buttler in that finisher role for the World Cup.
  • Stokes is worth having in the squad for his talismanic qualities and a brilliant one day batsman. He also brings big match temperament and has played a few match winning innings in both red and white ball, we wouldn't be world champions if he hadn't held his nerve in the last final and then we only won the Headingly Test that year thanks to him hanging in there on day four and taking over on day five against a good bowling line up. Because he's a good batsman he doesn't need to try and play a shot at every ball he faces.

If we can smuggle a few overs out of him in the odd game then even better.

yep got a lot of finishers, it's pretty much why morgan stepped aside as there were others (buttler and livingstone) who were better at it and he was keeping them out the team.

Can't see it being a good move, personally. Heard rumours he's looking to take up off spin so he can stay as an all rounder and prolong his bowling career.
  • Mott to Stokes: World Cup?

    Stokes: lol
