Charlton Athletic vs Lincoln City | Saturday 7th January 2023 - 3pm KO | Match Preview

Charlton Athletic vs Lincoln City
Saturday 7th January 2023 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: James Oldham

Introduction
After a long run of eight games without a win, the Addicks finally managed to secure all three points with a routine victory at the second stadium they call home - Whilst the 1-3 win on the South Coast wasn't perfect on New Years Day, its given both the Addicks and Dean Holden a platform to try and build upon whilst we wait for fresh reinforcements during this months Transfer Window - Bigger games lie in wait in the coming week, yet securing League One status remains the priority... Continuing this coming Saturday.

The Opposition
Name: Lincoln City (15th) | Manager: Mark Kennedy
Ground: Sincil Bank
Previous League Result: Lincoln City 1-1 Ipswich Town

Visiting the Valley this weekend are one of two draw specialists of League One this season - Both Fleetwood Town, and our visitors this Saturday: Lincoln City have drawn the most games this season, a total of eleven, which is one more than both Portsmouth and Charlton - Naturally you'd then suspect another cagey game, with few goals, a bit like what we got to witness when we visited Sincil Bank earlier in the season, drawing 0-0 in the process.

As stressed at times this season, its goals conceded that has been our greatest issue this season, rather than finding the back of the net - Whilst for Lincoln you could argue that it has been the latter that is their problem, rather than keeping the ball out of their net, with only four teams (outside of the top six) with better defensive records than the Imps thus far this season, whilst on the other hand, only five of the bottom seven   have worse returns in front of goal

Lincoln have lost as many games that we've won... With just two defeats since October, I dont think we can expect another classic come 3pm tomorrow.

Charlton Team News
Lets talk injuries first because they're always fun to discuss - On a positive number it appears as though Conor McGrandles is slowly regaining fitness after his latest injury, the summer signing, having played 78-games our opponents, played for our U21s yesterday, and whilst its highly unlikely he'll be involved tomorrow, its good to have additional numbers to slowly call upon.

Elsewhere and Chuks Aneke suffered a setback prior to the clash with Portsmouth on Sunday, so will surely miss out - With both McGrandles and Aneke still out, you'd expect opportunities to be given to youth with Aaron Henry and Daniel Kanu both earning a number of minutes these last few games - As for the match day squad as a whole... Why change the winning formula? - Especially when its taken so long to find in recent months

Maynard-Brewer
Clare - Inniss - Ness - Sessegnon
Morgan - Dobson - Fraser
Rak-Sakyi - Leaburn - Blackett-Taylor

Substitutes Bench: Harness - Lavelle - Henry - Payne - Campbell - Stockley - Kanu

  • I expect most fans will still be in the car park queuing for Tuesday tickets, so I hope that they don't miss much.

    Comfortable 4-0 win...The play-off push is on... ;)
  • Lincoln is a ream that likes a scrap, is persistent and doesn't lack for skill .. but we (at last) are discovering some form of our own and Holden is starting to get a decent tune from his 'choir' .. home win ..
as an aside, we still have far too many potential first team possibles out injured, nothing changes there does it ?

    CAFC 2 v Lincoln City 1
  • A must win.
  • like every league game this season, i've turned up not having a clue whether we will win or lose - only decison for me is what time to start queuing for man utd tickets and if i go early and get served early, what do i do with myself for the next 4 hours? (not boozing)
  • Play the same team as last Saturday, for an hour and actually turn up we will win about 3-1.

Any unreported injuries, "resting" players, positional changes, or phoning it in and we won't.
  • Looking forward to seeing all our new signings masterminded by Gerry Adams and the gang of four.

So impressed how they have revolutionised the club. An exciting.new era.

Unconfirmed rumours even the chip portions may increase.

    1.1
  • Considering how over the last few seasons it feels like we tend to follow up a great performance against opposition we feel we won't beat, with an abhorrent performance against opposition we feel we should dominate - I am slightly worried about this game especially with our players having one eye on the United game.

Think we will know more about Holden as a manager after this game for sure.

think you're right - can't see them 'leaving it all out there' tomorrow tbh

Play like they did last week and we will win, if they play with one eye on Old Trafford and worrying about getting injured we may slip up.
  • Lincoln at home. Imagine predicting this circa 2002/3!! Gonna go for a 3-0 win. Friday beers kicking in! COYRs

    That's my one concern...
  • 1-0 and looking up rather than behind (for now…)

    Odeon Bugsby way Lol
  • Easy 2-0 win to the mighty CAFC Come On you Reds
  • Big game this. The amount of times this season and last we've come off the back of a good win to play a stinker the next. Hoping for a good performance and 3 points.
  • 3-1 to the Addicks.
  • Can’t see anything other than a comfortable 3-0 win for the Imps.

  • He better not play another Pappa Johns team for this one? Forget manure we need 3 points to ease the pressure. Lincoln are a tough team to beat, 1-1.
  • Surely we won’t play well twice in a row?! Players with one eye on old Trafford and a 1-0 defeat is my pessimistic view. Expect to see that team but maybe Lavelle instead of Inniss as I doubt he will be able to play both and we will need him on Tuesday

    This.

Play the U18's as the first team will be at 90% pace fearing a tackle will rob them of playing at the "Theatre of Dreams".

With that in mind I'm going for a 3-1 defeat.
  • Holden must tell his players that no bottlers will make the Old Trafford trip, this is the big one and that he'd expect them to win.  2 - 0.

I'm sure he will say something along those lines. My main concern is Sessegnon. We need him today above all else but we are going to need him on Tuesday too. Can he do two games in three days? The ideal scenario is we are comfortable and can make subs but when are we ever comfortable?
  • Hedging my bets until I see the starting line up but my my gut tells me that, for the first time in ages, we won’t lose this.  Not convinced that we’ll win it either but I don’t think we’ll lose. BTW I’m excluding the Pompey game from my gut feelings as we all knew that was going to be a free pass 👍
  • Play well today and you then play Tuesday night. Today is more important
  • 3-0 Addicks!
  • Good point. Quite scary if Sess is out v Man utd!
