After a season and a third without a club, Penney has signed for Rochdale in the National League.
My mate, who supports them, has asked if he's any good. I've broken the news to him gently, namely, that he's the worst left-back I've ever seen - and doubtless very unfit.
His last game anywhere was for us on 28th February 2023. He had trials at Orient and Notts County in the summer but failed to sign for them and is now at Rochdale on a non-contract basis. Following the sending off of one of Rochdale's other players, he came on as a 60th minute sub and helped them to hold onto a 1-0 win at Gateshead.
Someone who has never struggled to earn a contract is Ian Henderson. He's now made 793 appearances and scored 205 goals including 17 appearances and 3 goals this season for Rochdale. He'll be 40 in exactly two months time. Penney, by comparison, will be 27 at around about the same time and has just 102 appearances to his name in almost 8 years as a pro.

Good luck to him, what i would say just to soften the blow to any Rochdale fans is that the performances we saw of him can not be a true reflection of him as a player otherwise there was no way he would of made it as a professional footballer to the age of 25. I think there was clearly something up with him physically or mentally. I'm not normally the most forgiving for player performances but i felt sorry for him because there is no way someone putting in the performances he did for us could be happy with that.
Also if he trained like how he played for us no one on earth is giving him a contract, so they must have seen something in him. As said i dont think any here will be welcoming him back with open arms but i hope it works out for him.

It was only 3 years ago he was playing for Ipswich, so if he can get his fitness back he is surely capable of doing a job at National league level.

You’d hope so. Before he came to us, he did well up at Motherwell, so hopefully he can perform at National League level if he can get himself match fit.
another one of the gazillion guff players who come in and we have to give a quick hand shandy to and say yeah yeah yeah solid signing blah blah blah and they end up on the huge steaming pile of shit footballers bodies that pass through on their merry way to footballing oblivion

Now you have given him his positives let him know his weaknesses. 😂

Still stick by this and worth remembering I was right about May, Inniss and Gooden
I can not believe that this lad has made any sort of living in professional football.
Did you see his video? It showed him being an attacking full back and taking the ball with him and laying the pass to a team mate. Was it an off field problem or he just lost the ability to focus ? If Penney can overcome the issues which has seen his career nose dive then he can stop the decline.

It appears he hardly played there. I suspect his career will continue to slide down the leagues.
He joins the list of players who have gone straight from playing for us to playing in the National League.
If you drop a Penney it's always going to go down.
😉
Surprised he's got another gig there tbh given two clubs in the same league decided he was worth 5 games between them before they both got rid.
