Rate Our Squad?

edited January 2023 in General Charlton
With all the transfer intrigue around at the moment I made a list of the player I’d really like to keep, and a list of all the players I wouldn’t mind letting go.

Keepers are in Groups A & B
Let Go-ers are in Groups D & E
Group C are the Not Sures.

Obviously I don’t want anyone to go if they’re not adequately replaced, unless they’re on very high wages and underperforming.
A LIST (Must keep):
Sess
Egbo
Dobson
Fraser
Ness
AMB
B LIST (Keep):
Rak Sakyi
Wollacott. (Could be an A, but injury intervened)
Inniss (the post Garner version)
Leaburn (still improving, possibly A list)
CBT (higher on a good day)
Penney (? limited data)
Clare
Bonne
O’Connell
Kane (? limited data)
C LIST (Jury’s out):
Morgan
Payne
Campbell (up & coming)
Henry (up & coming)
Elerewe (up & coming)
D LIST (Not too upset if they go):
Jaiyesimi
Aneke (great on his day, but too fragile)
McGrandles (bit of a mystery)
Thomas (arguably underrated)
Kirk
E LIST (Happy if they go, sorry):
Lavelle
Stockley
Chin (Actually C or D list might be more accurate. Still young, so may improve. Looked very good in the second half v Brighton)
Clayden

What is Chin's actual position? He's been played all over the place. Play him in his position for a run of games and see what he's like.

Ness early season came on as a right back, didn't look too good, now playing centre back and a revelation.

    A LIST (Must keep):
Sess - I fear his injury is career limiting and not worth a squad space
Egbo - big ? over his robustness, decent player tho
Dobson - absolutely on a much enhanced contract too
Fraser - at 3rd division probably but he ain't got the lungs for anything more
    Ness - yep, very promising

    B LIST (Keep):
Rak Sakyi - we won't get that chance nor could we afford him
Inniss (the post Garner version) - at 3rd division level maybe if he reduces the idiot factor
Leaburn (still improving) - A List
CBT (higher on a good day) - at 3rd division level yes
    Penney (? limited data)
Clare at 3rd division level yes
Bonne - too soon to tell, probably yes
    O’Connell - at 3rd division level yes
    Kane (? limited data)

    C LIST (Jury’s out):
Morgan 3rd division squad player but not a regular first teamer
Payne 3rd division squad player but not a regular first teamer
    Campbell (up & coming)
    Henry (up & coming)
    Elerewe (up & coming)

D LIST (Not too upset if they go):
Jaiyesimi -  never been consistent or fit enough
Aneke (great on his day, but too fragile) definitely finished
McGrandles (bit of a mystery) park player
Thomas (arguably underrated) we haven't seen much but his best days are gone

E LIST (Happy if they go, sorry):
    Lavelle washed up beach donkey
Stockley 3rd division squad player but not a regular first teamer
Chin not sure we've seen him play much in his natural spot
Clayden  I think he's a late bloomer and a worthy successor to CBT, he ain't a full back

You've left out our three remaining goalies (four with Kone).

I'd keep AMB and Kone, and get an experienced back-up in for next year. Jojo and Harness can move on.

IMO, if we are to progress, we need to replace -

    Lavelle
    Stockley
    Chin
    Clayden
    Thomas
    McGrandles
    Aneke
    DJ
    Payne
    Morgan
    Kirk

I don't like Rak-Sakhi so if he goes I'm not too bothered, as long as he is replaced.

Kane, Penney, Sessegnon are only here on loan until season end anyway. I'd love to have Sess back as a permanent player.

Bonne is only here till season end. Ness has looked good recently but it's very early in his career. Clare, Innis and O'Connell I'm still not convinced by...

CBT, Leaburn, Fraser, Dobson, (a fit) Egbo, plus youngsters like TC, Henry, Anderson, Kanu and Elerewe need to be tied onto long contracts.

That's a lot of work to do for whoever is going to be managing this club over the summer...

JRS doesn’t seem to be rated that highly (generally, not this thread). Feels a bit like Konsa was here in that he’s not a typical lower league player so his potential is underestimated. Konsa wasn’t the strongest or best in the air, while JRS is best wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 and much more of a goalscorer than traditional winger.

    A LIST (Must keep):

    Maynard-Brewer
    O'Connell (Our best defender)
Dobson (Irreplaceable. If Dobbo is sold we are doomed.)
    Fraser
Ness (Looks to be an emerging talent)

    B LIST (Keep):

Sess (On loan so not our player. Good, but injury issues)
    Egbo (Good, but injury issues)
    Inniss (the post Garner version)
    Leaburn (still improving)
Penney (? On loan, but urgently need a left back)
    Payne (Creates and scores)

    C LIST (Jury’s out):

Kirk (Controversial, but still high on goals plus assists)
    Bonne (Much to proove)
    CBT (Too inconsistent)
Rak Sakyi (On loan, so not our player)
    Campbell (up & coming)
    Henry (up & coming)
    Elerewe (up & coming)
Kane (Unfortunately, I don't think we will see him again)
Lavelle (Confidence is shot, but decent player in there somewhere)
Jaiyesimi (Think he is decent defensive wing back)
Stockley (Still think he has something to offer, but clearly needs to find his mojo)
Chin (up & coming and has been played out of position)
    Clayden (up & coming)
    Harness (up & coming

D LIST (Not too upset if they go):

Clare (Too inconsistent and at times very poor. Has done a job there, but not a defender)
Morgan (Jury has been out too long. Squad player at best)
McGrandles (Hasn't had much game time, but never had a good game)
    Thomas (Fitness issues)
Wollacott  (Surplus to requirements now AMB has claimed number 1 slot)

E LIST (Happy if they go):

Aneke (Great on his day, but fitness is a bad joke. We will never be able to get rid of him though)
Gilbey (Out on loan, but wouldn't be sad to never see him again)

    Ness
Leaburn (go for the right price obvs)
    CBT
    Wollacott

    B LIST (Keep):
Inniss (Never stopped thinking he's a decent defender if he can concentrate)
    Bonne
    O’Connell
    Campbell
    Kanu (Loan Out)
    Maynard-Brewer

    C LIST (Jury’s out/Loanee):
Payne (Probably our most No.10 of our potential 10's)
    Henry
    Elerewe
    Penney (Too Early/Loanee)
    Kane (Too Early/Loanee)
    Rak Sakyi (Loanee)

    Stockley
    McGrandles
    Kirk

I don't really want us to lose many players to be honest. We've had so much upheaval, players signed for the wrong system, players who are decent players made to look bad in the wrong set-up, board room nonsense. We've already seen under Holden that some players like Inniss, Fraser and CBT are transformed, I'd like to see what Payne, McGrandles and others can do with a bit more time under the new manager (assuming he's even there next season). You can't complain about constant squad churn if you constantly churn the squad. Assuming Holden stays I think we'll likely see the end of Stockley, Kirk and Lavelle. Stockley could survive if he fixes his approach but it might be too late. I think Kirk might be the kind of player Holden doesn't trust, and Lavelle just seems to have completely broken considering he even hasn't looked good under Holden. It's a shame but they could probably all do with fresh starts.

Want us to keep our youngsters like Campbell and Henry.
Morgan depends on what sort of replacements we are going for. If it's people Fraser not worried but if it's Mcgrandles or Payne I'd like to keep him.

Ness is a CB, and struggled at RB, which isn't surprising really.
Chin, I’m not so sure. He’s looked quite good at LB at times. In the second half v. Brighton he was very good.

Kirk Slipped off my list, and I wasn’t going to include goalies as AMB and Wollacott are both good. But have added them now.
Agree now that youngsters like Chin and Campbell should be kept, as they’re improving.

If we want to be serious about promotion next season we need to keep hold of AMB, Ness, Leaburn, Dobson, Fraser and O'Connell as key members of our team.

I would put Egbo in the same bracket if he can stay fit and same with Sess if he is in budget to sign. Likewise Rak Saki but he is clearly unrealistic/out of our reach.

As squad players I would be happy with CBT, Innis, Clare, Bonne (maybe), Woolacott, and Morgan, but all could be traded upwards if we had the budget.

Whatever our budget we should try to move on Thomas, Kirk, Lavelle, Stockley (sadly), Aneke (sadly and purely fitness related), DJ, Paye and Clayden.

No opinion on McGrandles, Penney or Kane.

Youth like Campbell, Chin, Elerewe and Henry may need more loans.

Keep the ones in bold is 14, add 3-5 strong loanees and a couple of purchases and we would have a decent shout.

I thought Chin was a CM converted to FB? No chance he’s physical enough for CB, and from what I’ve seen he’s more likely to make it as a FB than a CM.

Don’t think he’d ever get played a CB. But has looked good at times a LB. Perhaps a loan would help him.

I think it is very unfair if you are creating a list like this and put young players who have not yet established themselves on it. Chin has been asked to play his first senior games out of position and what should happen is you give a young player opportunities off the bench, if they take them they get into the team and even then you need to be ready to give them a rest if their form dips.

To be fair I think I agree, which is why I added: ‘Actually C or D list might be more accurate. Still young, so may improve. Looked very good in the second half v Brighton.’
All of the young players who’ve turned out for us have looked good at times, but because of the lack of depth in the squad and injuries I think they may have been exposed on occasions before they’re quite ready. Loan spells would probably be a good call for them.

So young players moved to the C list as it’s too early to let them go, unless it’s a loan.

If we're dead serious about getting out of this poxy league (upwards) then there's far too many players in A,B and even C on people's lists. I'm not going to include the proper youngsters or the loaners on my list.

    A
    AMB
    Dobson
    Leaburn

    B
    Fraser
    Egbo
    CBT
    O'Connell

    C
    Wollacott
    Bonne

    D
    Inniss
    Clare
    McGrandles
    Kirk
    Payne

    E
    Morgan
    Stockley
    Jaiyesimi
    Lavelle
    Gilbey
    Thomas
    Aneke

Separate to this, the list of youngsters I think will end up having a positive impact on the squad in the future, becoming first team players:

    Campbell
    Henry
    Mitchell
    Harness
