I heard on the radio tonight that there is a real security threat when using Deep seek. Lots of warnings like this around.
DeepSeek AI will fully compromise your digital security and personal privacy. You will expose all passwords, usernames, and accounts across every device you own. The Chinese government has unrestricted access to all your data, including your credentials, personal files, messages, and financial information.
DeepSeek actively records every keystroke, allowing them to capture everything you type—passwords, private messages, and sensitive information in real time. Once installed, their software exploits access to other devices on your network, spreading surveillance and control far beyond the original device.
Exactly the same as Copilot, and any other AI that you allow access to your system for the purposes of 'learning your habits'. It's spyware on steroids.

Interesting to see that Deep Seek - the lower-cost, Chinese-developed alternative to ChatGPT - has caused some pearl clutching among US tech stocks today
More efficient models mean you can do more with given hardware, so I can't see why tech companies would stop buying Nvidia's GPUs: at a minimum, it means AI companies can re-train their models 10 times more frequently.
Still, I hope it will dampen some of the AI hype.
I had a quick go on the DeepSeek website and it feels very similar to ChatGPT, with the odd mistake or inconsistency:
"the Lancaster bomber could carry up to 14,000 lbs (6,350 kg) of bombs, including the 12,000 lb 'Tallboy' and 22,000 lb 'Grand Slam' earthquake bombs".
So, not much difference in quality, just vastly cheaper.
I want to uncover the masks I am currently wearing, the roles I am playing and the illusions I am believing. Please guide me through this process by asking me ten reflective questions, one at a time, to help me recognise the stories I am telling myself. After I answer the tenth question, please step into the role of my higher self and analyse my responses. Identify the top ten negative patterns in my life, and the top positive behaviours I can embrace to grow. Be direct and truthful, tough love is welcome. Provide me with some affirmations to support my growth; and actionable steps to change my behaviour and embody my authentic self. Include a message of encouragement from my highest self to celebrate how far I have come on my journey and to inspire me to continue to grow in the right direction.
Only use it if you're prepared for some interesting answers about yourself.

It's healthy to have some mistrust of most hardware/software nowadays.
But DeepSeek is open source, so that can give you some reassurance.
I doubt TikTok is any safer, but then again, I'm not on most social media.

I would be fascinated to know if anyone tries this. I think the output is astonishing.
I've experienced my first major disappointment (of the type "I can't do that, sorry") with Claude this week. I have a lot of investments in funds, and it's healthy to review them. But actually objectively reviewing them on your own isn't easy because it's not easy to compare directly the performance of more than about 3 funds at a time. Which is a disgrace really, but that's for another thread.
Anyway I use an IFA (a Lifer) and he reviewed my funds and sent through a list of alternatives. So, we are all told to do due diligence, right, when getting financial advice? But the task looked daunting. Somehow need look up two funds at a time, and compare 1 and 3 year performance, then consider the overall effect on the portfolio of any change. It's the sort of thing you put off, and makes you head to the transfer window thread instead.
But then I remembered my new friend Claude and how he is brilliant at getting you started on what looks like a daunting and complex task. So I uploaded my current portfolio details and the IFA's recommendations.
And then he fessed up. He can't do it. He says:
I cannot actively retrieve real-time or historical financial data. While I have broad knowledge about financial markets and funds through my training data (which ended in April 2024), I cannot:
Access current fund performance data
Connect to financial databases
Scrape websites like Trustnet or HL
Query live financial data feeds
Well, that's all disappointing when the data is publicly available. I cannot believe that there isn't an AI platform that isn't able to do such a relatively simple and helpful task. Anyone know of one?

I did. It was very interesting.
If you use ChatGPT a lot, another good one to try: "Based on all our previous conversations, tell me something you've noticed about me that you think I probably haven't realised."

It should be able to access data that's available on the web. Have you tried ChatGPT to see if it gives a "better" response?

Not yet. I should mention that I'm actually paying for a "superior" version of Claude. I'll first ask Chat GPT if it is able to do it, before I waste more time uploading stuff and prompts.
The problem seems to be the way Claude is programmed, it cannot access websites to get actual real time data, it is constrained by a cut-off date (April 24). When I tried Chat GPT, a year ago, it mentioned a similar time based restriction. Has it changed?
Update: "AI" says no.
"While I don't have the capability to process uploaded files or directly access specific fund performance data, I can suggest some resources and tools that might streamline this process for you."
(AKA, "do it yourself you lazy fucker, I'm too busy helping @Chizz to become a better person to deal with trivia like this")

If you are uploading private financial information about yourself to the paid-for Claude for analysis, do you get any guarantees about how it is used, shared or secured?
EDIT: just saw the FAQs for Anthropic, and it sounds like they are quite careful with prompt data.

I only uploaded the names of the funds I hold, not the amounts, same for the potential new funds suggested by my IFA.
I asked Perplexity as a neutral source about this lack of capability. The answer mentioned a few things of varying relevance to my request, but broadly, "Static Knowledge Cutoff" and "Text-first Architecture are the most relevant factors at work here. Perplexity led me to this professional website which explain why these general models are so far of limited use even to asset managers.
So there we are. It seems that while in this new golden age people can spend time using AI to connect with their best selves, they will remain in a fog about how well their money is being deployed by the financial services industry (and I am not referring to my IFA, who has much the same problem as I ran into).
It's currently only available to users paying £200 a month but OpenAI's latest model looks like it'll have a fair crack at your use case @PragueAddick:

Yes, training the models takes days or weeks, for which you have to freeze the data.
Have you asked Claude to help you create a spreadsheet to do the analysis you want to do?

No. Who would fill in the data? Me. Do-able but will take ages.
Anyway I prodded my IFA who has done his best but he can only input a limited number of funds at one time for comparison and he's with a big name network.
@ hermann I am not sure from that if it will address my issue. Isn't it still using "Static Knowledge" ?

Maybe programmed not to give financial advice. I assume that there are regulations which prevent it doing so as well as risk of litigation.
As a general issue, that was one of the things Perplexity mentioned as a barrier. But I wasn't asking for advice, just the facts, freely available but a bugger to assemble in a big chunk, that would help me make an informed decision.
I was also hoping that it could crunch my portfolio to dig out exactly what is in the funds I have. That is info that is an even bigger bugger to to get hold of. That's bad, because I suspect a lot of myfunds are invested in Nvidia, Amazon and Swasticar etc, and I might not be happy with the amount of that. But us mug punters are not allowed to access this easily, and Claude and co. are not about to rat on the fund managers, it seems.
Quite amusing that AI companies are now accusing each other of intellectual property violations when their whole being relies on nicking everybody else's property.

I would be fascinated to know if anyone tries this. I think the output is astonishing.
I tried it and wasn't overly impressed. As with much of Chat GPT it felt like a regurgitation of my input in a clever way

Well done for trying. It's a shame it didn't work, because I found it utterly transformational.

Out of interest when responding to the questions how in dept did you go. By way of example approx how many words did you use

Out of interest when responding to the questions how in dept did you go. By way of example approx how many words did you use
I would be fascinated to know if anyone tries this. I think the output is astonishing.

Exactly what I thought. My input was more thoughtful than the rather bland responses which were a bit like a newspaper astrology column in its 'encouraging' generality and which were along the lines of "I can see you have thought about this profoundly and you are right in thinking blah blah..."
I was a bit more impressed with the questions it asked me as answering them did require some reflection and then the answers and to dos were sensible and accurate given my answers
Rory Stewart is actively using DeepSeat, so that’s a good enough recco for me. He says that he put in a question about Heathrow Airport expansion to first ChatGPT, then DeepSeat and the latter gave him much more detailed fact based answers. (Source, Rest is Politics podcast)
But I am not counting on it being able to give me that very basic comparative analysis of the funds in my investment portfolio. 😉

It will basically be this, but without the changes forced onto Microsoft by the public outcry: https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-announces-sweeping-changes-to-controversial-recall-feature-for-windows-11-copilot-pcs/
Only use it if you're prepared for some interesting answers about yourself.
But DeepSeek is open source, so that can give you some reassurance.
I doubt TikTok is any safer, but then again, I'm not on most social media.
- Access current fund performance data
- Connect to financial databases
- Scrape websites like Trustnet or HL
- Query live financial data feeds
Well, that's all disappointing when the data is publicly available. I cannot believe that there isn't an AI platform that isn't able to do such a relatively simple and helpful task. Anyone know of one?If you use ChatGPT a lot, another good one to try: "Based on all our previous conversations, tell me something you've noticed about me that you think I probably haven't realised."
(AKA, "do it yourself you lazy fucker, I'm too busy helping @Chizz to become a better person to deal with trivia like this")
EDIT: just saw the FAQs for Anthropic, and it sounds like they are quite careful with prompt data.
It seems that while in this new golden age people can spend time using AI to connect with their best selves, they will remain in a fog about how well their money is being deployed by the financial services industry (and I am not referring to my IFA, who has much the same problem as I ran into).
https://openai.com/index/introducing-deep-research/
Have you asked Claude to help you create a spreadsheet to do the analysis you want to do?
Anyway I prodded my IFA who has done his best but he can only input a limited number of funds at one time for comparison and he's with a big name network.
@ hermann I am not sure from that if it will address my issue. Isn't it still using "Static Knowledge" ?
is @PeanutsMolloy out of a job?
I was also hoping that it could crunch my portfolio to dig out exactly what is in the funds I have. That is info that is an even bigger bugger to to get hold of. That's bad, because I suspect a lot of myfunds are invested in Nvidia, Amazon and Swasticar etc, and I might not be happy with the amount of that. But us mug punters are not allowed to access this easily, and Claude and co. are not about to rat on the fund managers, it seems.
I've been using it to try and help provide pension pot forecasting and have willingly made adjustments on the basis of its feedback.
