Sad news. Loved YMO and Forbidden Colours is one of my favourite ever tracks and a simply wonderful piece of music. Hugely influencial working with David Sylvian and Japan in the 80's. RIP Ryuichi
Very sad news. He was diagnosed with cancer back in 2020, but you always hope gor a recovery. I found him via David Sylvian and Japan. They complemented each other as two 'off centre' musician/bands very much expanding the genre, and I have wonderful album by Ryuichi with Cristian Fennesz called Cendre which I've seen described as being like listening to Debussey in a thunder storm. An amazing musician. RIP

He had cancer of the oesophageal back in 2014 sadly. He had radiation and chemo and was in remission but he kind of knew there was a high chance of the cancer spreading elsewhere. He was diagnosed with Rectal cancer in 2020 and moved back to his native Tokyo after living in New York since the early 90's.
I've followed his story since the earlier bout of cancer and he was a truly remarkable man. May he rest in peace.
Was with my stepson on Sunday morning and we were talking about music - Yellow Magic orchestra got mentioned in relation to Stereolab (Ryuichi was an influence on them) and then heard on the radio a couple of hours later that he had died.
