We’ve changed formation so we don’t play with wingers anymore. May has replaced Rak-Sakyi as the main goal threat
Edun has replaced Sessegnon. Not sure if he is better but he might be fitter. Asiimwe has replaced Clare, he might not be better yet but he definitely will be a better player than Clare. Plus we will probably sign another wing back that will hopefully be an upgrade on those 2 (or it could be Sessegnon)3 -
For me while the result is important what I want to see in game one is some semblance of a style of play that suggests we are promotion candidates. That is we play with a level of confidence that says "we got this".
Going back a decade or so when we played Bournemouth in the first game under Chris Powell we ran out convincing winners and while one game doesn't make or break a season I could see that he had built a side to do a job. Chris Powell took over at a similar point in the previous season as Dean Holden did last year. Under both managers there were some good and bad results in their first half season. Powell then axed a few ineffective players, brought in his own target players and the rest was history. Dean Holden has pretty much done the same thing in refreshing the squad, we now have to see how effective that squad is and what his playing strategy is. Bear in mind though that it took a few more arrivals after the season kicked off and some time for things to gel for Powell. Similarly we need to bring a couple of new faces in and rotate a few out so the recruitment is not complete.
All uncertainty over the ownership has gone and this doesn't look as strong a division as last year.
That said playing a newly promoted team in game one is never ideal.

Difficult one to predict, but we usually start well first game at home. The side still looks too similar to last year's one for my liking0

3-1 May , Camara and Fraser - we show we have one of the best midfields in the League as well as goal poacher in Alfie. Camara to be player of the season.2

Tayo Edun is at least a left-footed leftback and can play wingback. Steve Sessegnon could get forward and linked well with CBT but looked to me to be out of position at leftback, rightback was probably his position. Would he come back to Charlton even if he was fit? He's currently out of work having been released by Fulham and probably looking at a Championship club.
Ryan Inniss had a poor disciplinary record and offered physicality but made too many clumsy and avoidable mistakes. Defensively we conceded too many goals last year and annoyingly too many from set-pieces and he has to take his share of blame. Lloyd Jones as part of a three man central defence hopefully will cut some of those careless mistakes out.
Panutche Camara is a box-to-box midfielder and offers different things to Albie Morgan. Albie was good at picking out passes but never won enough in midfield, he didn't track back that well either and had too many anonymous games for my liking. Camara fits a style of play that Dean Holden wants us to adopt - shuttling the ball forward from defence to midfield and then attack much faster and simply making us look stronger and less submissive in the middle of the pitch. He can run with the ball which was a weakness of Morgan. Why did Ipswich get rid of him? Well they've loaned him out not sold him. Presumably they originally signed him to do what he did for Plymouth but his groin had other ideas and when fit he couldn't get into a strong side heading for promotion. I assume they are settled for players in midfield now...
Have we replaced JRS's goals from midfield, well Alfie May scored more goals last season than he did so on paper we're up but we need the attacking wingers and wing-backs to contribute both goals and assists. JRS's 15 goals from the wing were a bit of a statistical outlier.5 -

Enjoyed the 1st of your ever excellent previews this season @ForeverAddickted.
As most of you are saying, we start with a solid win. A marker must be laid down early doors. The squad isn't complete yet, but we have enough to roll these lot over.
For those lucky enough to get to the game, enjoy!4 -

I’d love to think we’ll roll Orient over but we are struggling on the left side of the defence and up front. Camara not 100% match fit. Orient will be right up to it for their first game back in league one and with a full away end. Easy is not the way I see it.3

I think 1-1, start well but concede late on to share the spoils.1

Orient sold out their 3200 tickets

I am hoping for a line up something like this .. barring injury
4 3 3 .. Maynard B .. Egbo Hector Thomas Edun .. Dobson Fraser Camara .. Anderson May Blackett-Taylor
Nothing too fancy .. Anderson has been scoring goals, let him have a bash while his confidence must be high
Important game this, a lot of us a expecting us to have a very good season .. i m o important that we get off to a very positive start0 -
Not a bad preview, but to be honest I was hoping for a more comprehensive overhaul of our match preview squad, and more of a break from the failure of last season.
It's disappointing that the attempts to bring in Exeter Life's best writer have failed so far.7 -

The two Relegations on the hand, clearly NOT my fault!!1 -
Make sure you have waterproof if you are going, will be very wet. How good the game will be is another question0

But the first home game is always "shirt sleeve weather"!
I am absolutely gutted I won't be there for this, I never miss the first home game of the season.
I'll miss that wonderful moment walking down Floyd Road full of excitement, anticipation and hope.
Full on misery by the Bristol Rovers game, plus raincoat.1 -

I am confident we will win but even if we don't, it is a long season and we are led to believe there will be additions. We are going to need those additions win, lose or draw on Saturday. I think accepting that, we are in a good place.1

2-1 Charlton. Fraser (23), May (88) and Pigott (49)0

Got a horrible feeling we might lose this3

Newly promoted team, full of confidence and out to prove a point. 0-3.0

Great to have these back. So looking forward to the season starting now.
I would love to see Campbell start alongside May. However, I think with the new laws around stoppage time, and the amount the added, we might see him start on the bench and come on with the idea that his pace could hurt tiring legs for longer.
Whatever happens, I hope Anderson is in the squad and comes on, he's going to be a star and really think he will show it this season.
Get Fraser on the ball as much as possible and in areas high up the pitch and things will happen for us. As we have seen so many times.
I think we have to be careful against Orient with their wide players as the space we leave behind our wing-backs are going to be the area for concern. We can't afford to have our back 3 stretched right across the width of the ptich and then have their midfield running into the box, it'll be an area we have to be better in.
Overall, a win to start the season.
Charlton 2-0 Orient
May x2

Don’t accept it’s critical to win and get 3 points for promotion prospects as the team we put out will not be the team we put out in 6 weeks or 10 weeks time.it will more importantly give a pointer to whether our depth of squad can support a promotion push.I’m optimistic our best 11 including a few quality signings/loans will be able to compete for top 6 and hopefully a top 2.It’s how we cope with injuries and suspensions that I think will prove the biggest challenge and this first game, with some second string players, will be a good indicator.2
