Definitely defence a major worry that needs addressing but could have been so different if we got a second when we were dominating early on. Leaburn injury costing us, Welling game has cost us dearly.
That was obvious from preseason. Also how few of our players have ball skills.
On the one hand you could say we were a bit unlucky to lose that - May's shot was going in until it hit a defender when the score was 2-2 and Dobson really should have scored right at the end. And as the other night, Maynard-Brewer makes a good save but the ball just drops kindly for their player.
But on the other, how can you lose to such a poor Port Vale team? Suicidal defending is one way - and maybe the time is coming when instead of going gung-ho for a winner, we keep more players back and stop getting sucker punched.
One thing that is driving me crazy is set pieces. Every time our opponents have one they seem to put a dangerous ball into our box. We get one and the cross is mis-hit or cleared. Surely, they must work on this in training? Or don't they?
Blackett-Taylor is a incredibly frustrating player. His speed, and the way he goes past players, is outstanding. But his final cross or shot is so often hopeless. I guess if it wasn't, he wouldn't be here.
Finally, Anderson and Asiimwe are going to be good players. Just hope Asiimwe's mistake doesn't make him lose confidence and good to see the great ovation he got when he went off.
As I said then, we lack any leadership on the pitch, this will happen time and time again, we are a good 5-6 players short of any sort of challenge for the top 6 (in reality 4th - 6th).
Too many players are making poor decisions too often. I know to a degree that's why they are in league 1, but it's embarrassing how wrong they are time after time, we lack experience, we lack quality and we lack leaders, therefore we will also lack wins and performances.
Getting rid of Holden is not a solution (yet) I want to see us get some quality players in and then see how he performs as Manager. I'm just very worried that this consortium bunch don't appear to want to invest.
Correct.
We are playing catch up already. Nothing has changed, nor will it until we get an owner that understands football.
And senior management that aren’t having the ownership over?
Fraser injured Camara unfit and injured Taylor unfit and jury out Hector unfit and not first choice Thomas unfit and been unimpressive Terrell Thomas resigned but not first choice DJ waste of space Kirk waste of space McGrandles- Why's he still here Payne - not good enough Leaburn - injured and sorely missed
It is simply unacceptable five games in to be in this state.
Once again we handed it on a plate to them still can't defend to save our life Just can't understand why Holden is not working on this problem I can understand youngsters making errors but marking & picking up runners is non existing last season was the same & all the time it stays like this we are going nowhere well maybe down The boos at the end says it all Absolutely gutted watching us loosing another what should have been a home win banker sorry to say this but Holden has got to go

You missed our Aneke who is unlikely (imo) to play any meaningful role this season.
Rinse and repeat. Play ok and gift the oposition 3 goals.
The clamour for a striker is fair enough, but defensively we were a mess in pre-season and we are showing no signs of improving. The collective defending of setplays is criminal and shows no signs of improving and every one of our players has a howler which will cost us a goal in their back pocket.
Rapdily losing paitience with Holden as nothing is changing. Zero threat from set playsand at risk of conceding from every set play we face. If I am honest we look like conceding every time a team comes forward. The issues were there last year, they were there in pre-season and are showing no signs of going away. His substitutions are too late and he is leaving players who are wading through quicksand on the pitch - no surprise when they switch off or can't track a runner.
Pathetic from Hector for the second. Asimwe I can just about excuse - he was dead on his feet and you feared for him as soon as that ball was played over the top. However, how the hell are our management team leaving him one v one that late in the game? Its a joke. If the coaches don't see it then one of the senior pro's has to intervene. He should have been off 10mins before that happened.
Someone please explain to me why Terry Taylor started that game? He is mies off the pace and had Kirk or Payne put in that sort of performace they would have been crucified on here. He should be nowhere near the starting line up at the moment. I would genunely rather give McGrandles a chance.
Said it on Tuesday, but I think part of the defensive issues start with the goalkeeper. There is no doubting his shot stopping, but he doesn't command his area, doesn't influence the defenders in front of him and his distribution is poor. Not convinced Isted is any better, but its a problem for me.
Something is going to have to happen player wise in the next 11 days or we are in deep shit. As a minimum we need a striker, a wide attacker, probably some depth with another attacking midfielder, a right back and they way things are playing out a commanding centre back.
If May, Dobson or CBT get injured god help us.
4 defeats from 5 is a horror show. If we had played all the big hitters then fair enough, but the only team expected to be or around the top 6 who we have faced so far is Peterborough. In all likelihood it will be 5 defeats from 6 after next weekend end. Regardless of how well Oxford have started our reord at their place is terrible. Can anyone honestly say that we will keep a clean sheet in that game? No chance.
I'm so glad I have no interest in attending live ganes any more, at least you can close a laptop and forget about it. Looks like fans are voting with their feet already - the ground looked noticebly emptier today - especially the west and noth lower. Edit - just seen the attendance, so we have lost roughly 3.5k home fans from the opening day already!
We played some okay football but defensively we're terrible. We're too indecisive when it comes to taking a shot and CBT is incredibly wasteful with his end product.
Too many basic mistakes - why do the players switch off?
If we keep shipping goals we'll be battling relegation.
Holden still not addressed the main problem and that is wingers who can cross the ball .. loads of good positions we got into and wasted .. no point in a new striker if we can’t get the ball in .. Dobson miss in 99 th was poor yet there was people clapping him if that had been Payne or Kirk would they have clapped ?? Ref was awful another red card missed and the handball in the 99 th min ..
but today was down to Holden he let PV crowd mid and them really feed Asiimwe to the wolfs the kid was shot after 35 mins why he kept him on ???? Poor management

Our crosses, corners and set pieces are hopeless. We're also hopeless at defending set pieces.
It was clear it was clear last year to the more perceptive observers that our problems were at the back rather than scoring goals. Same again so far this season. Clean sheet against a promoted side who had no threat and then plenty conceded in four successive defeats - fingers need to be pointed at the manager and his coaching staff.
Another year in purgatory beckons unless we have the best 10 or so days of transfer activity in the club’s history. Already I’m thinking more about will we stay out of trouble than will we be able to mount a promotion challenge.

A lot of basic mistakes that presumably are down to poor coaching?
I feel so.sorry for Assimwe. He was our best player by some distance and ran his heart out. Why in.God's name was he left one on one with their fresh sub when he was clearly knackered?
We risk destroying the confidence of our best young players if this fiasco continues.
The defence is woeful. Typically talent scores goals and organisation stops goals. Our consistently poor defence sits at Holden’s door. There have to be question marks over his role because nothing has changed under his tenure in spite of the revolving personnel at the back.
With a bit of luck the midfield and attack would have a better return this season. They’re not too bad. You get the feeling we’d need three goals to win any game at the moment.
The one consolation is that I’m really enjoying watching the young players develop this season. Some very exciting players but I can’t imagine many of them being here in 24 months, so that optimism is severely tempered. If we want to retain these kids, we need to turn things around rapidly.

Yep. Holden picks the side and drills them all week on the training ground.

Oh well, its never easy being a Charlton fan.
I seem to recall last season someone posting on here allegedly in the know saying they didn’t practice set pieces in training.

Fraser injured
Camara unfit and injured
Taylor unfit and jury out
Hector unfit and not first choice
Thomas unfit and been unimpressive
Terrell Thomas resigned but not first choice

Kirk waste of space
McGrandles- Why's he still here
Payne - not good enough
Leaburn - injured and sorely missed

We got 0.
We now play Oxford (a) & then Fleetwood at home. If we don't pick up 3 points from those 2 games we could find ourselves in the bottom 4.
Just can't understand why Holden is not working on this problem

All pretty basic.
Palarse and the Spanners didn't win today!
Unfortunately we will end the season closer to 1 point per game.
Sad times
