Irrespective of the dodgy and out of date guess at player salaries and no salaries are quoted here, BUT what does it cost to pay this lot before you even get to the tea lady and turnstile staff, never mind the players?

Not enough clearly as our training, coaching and physio team must all be absolute guff, seeing as we're made up of useless, unfit, permanently crocked, talentless wankers and youth players!
Salarysport and transfermkrt are two websites that when I’m on them I can actually feel my brain cells dying
Transfermarkt is surprisingly good for things like squad number history; who is/was at what club and when; their career statistics; and... that's about it. They're not really useful for transfers at all, in a huge upset for nominative determinism.
I'm mostly coming to the aid of nominative determinism here, but I think they're alright for transfers. And then they do a match history breakdown which is good, plus, like you said, when a player played where.
I think a lot of it comes down to expectations. Unfortunately, football doesn't have a FanGraphs or Baseball Reference that are definitive sources of truth.

Anyone watching Charlton over the last couple of years can quite clearly see that the team issue made up of professionals.
