When I heard of his death, I was amazed that he was still around this long.
The fella is an icon and somewhat of a polymath.
What really surprised me is when I heard a piece of music last night on Riley and Coe (Six Music) which entranced me - it was exceptional; melodic, moody and mentally transporting in the best possible ways (I have looked at the track list and it was called 'The Edge'). I thought 'wow, it must have been an amazing time to be around when music that good was the background to TV and movies - especially compared to what passes for it now'.
They then announced that McCallum had written and played on it.
I also found out that after playing a pathologist on NCIS, he had amassed such knowledge regarding forensic pathology, after attending conferences etc. to prepare for the role, that he delivered a speech at a conference....of pathologists.
Watched the Great Escape last night in tribute, but his role was comparatively minor. That said, with such a cast of stars it's a difficult film for anyone to get too much space. McQueen and Garner were the stand outs for me, but they're all good.

What an incredible individual.
RIP.
