What's your view, @golfaddick, on the fact they walked off the field after the 77th over of the day?
79 overs given that 2 were lost due to change of innings.
Not good obviously. I've been to Perth (in January) and it does get dark pretty early but no idea why they ended with 11 overs still left to bowl. Losing 17 wickets in a day does slow things down but I don't think there were many DRS reviews so no idea why so few were bowled.
Btw......was this played at the WACA or the new ground ? Perth is known for its pace but not for 17 wickets going down for 237 runs in 1 day.

In my view, bowling 77 (out of 90) overs in a day is a terrible return. I asked you what you thought because, of course, no-one in the crowd could claim to be short-changed, having seen 20 players batting. But I can't see how losing that many overs in a day can be acceptable.
(For the record, I also don't see why they should lose two overs for the change of innings. Players should be able to make up the ten minutes it (sometimes) takes to change innings).

I managed to watch the last 15 mins of highlights on TNT Sports earlier. Towards the end the commentators were talking about seeing out the last 2 overs before "time" was called. Surely they didn't play an extra 30 mins on top of the 6 hours?? That would mean just 77 overs bowled even with the extra half an hour. They certainly didnt go off for bad light so I have no idea why only 77 overs were bowled.
If Cox is injured will they fly another keeper out? Wouldn't be comfortable with Pope keeping in a test.
Cox ruled out of series. He has fractured his right thumb (injury occurred during net session facing throw-downs from England assistant coach Jeetan Patel). He is one of those players, unfortunately, that does have issues with broken digits. Hoping Ollie Robinson, as per article below, "with Durham's Ollie Robinson expected to be handed a maiden call-up", will be his replacement. Deserves his chance.
Foakes is still the best keeper we have. I would bring him in as a stop gap.
Agreed however he has been treated absolutely appallingly by the current setup. I imagine he would be half inclined to tell them to get stuffed if they did reach out.
I don't think Foakes would consider it given how he's been treated. Would expect it's Durham's Ollie Robinson or if Baz and Rob want to be weird they'll call up James Rew the highly touted Somerset keeper.

This. It seems bizarre that they are now just trying to plug the gap rather than bringing in a very capable keeper. Seems like they dont want to back down on their original decision to drop Foakes completely.

One thing we don't know (and I truly do not) is the relationship between Foakes and McCullum, Key and Stokes. He hasn't been treated well by England but we don't know how he reacted to them to being dropped but we do know that they want someone who can score quickly and Foakes just can't do that. Which is why they called up Cox as Smith's replacement. Robinson is a better keeper than Cox (and certainly as good as Smith), is as near as we are going to get to Foakes with the gloves and had one of the best strike rates in the CC last year. As expressed by Ooah on this thread, the reason that Smith was called up ahead of Robinson was that England felt that he wasn't as good at facing fast, short pitched bowling but, if he does get the call, then he will get the chance to prove them wrong on that count.
I've not been watching the Aus-India game, but that second innings by India is an eye-opener. Are the Aussie bowlers strugging or even over the hill now?
Also noteworthy is India batting very conventionally to get those runs, with Jaiswal batting at a very unBazball strike rate of 54.21. By contrast England warm up for the NZ series with a 2 day pub game, scoring at run a ball.
And with Cox out injured, Bethell will presumably be the replacement, someone not even playing in this pub game. A talented kid, but a red ball batsman???

I'm not sure that Bethell is due to arrive until next week? Presumably, if the replacement wicket keeper gets there in time, he will bat at 7 which is where Cox was intended to do so.

Don’t think they can be over the hill after the first innings showing. Think it’s a combination of them behind undercooked and the pitch flattening

The first day pitch was very juicy though, with an unusual amount of dampness.

How has this snuck into into the English language
