  • Is Pope causing himself an issue if he gets runs down the order this series? Smith obviously the better keeper but also probably the better batter at 3 and Pope scoring runs down the order gives a decision to Stokes et al
  • Nobody wanting to bat in the top 3 is one of the things keeping Zak in the side. We have lots of 4-7 Bazball options, but not many at the top of the order.

We know what the obvious solution looks like but Root thinks he's more Kohli than Williamson in that respect. This is Root's average by position:

No: Innings - Runs - Average

    2:   11 -   417 - 41.70
    3:   60 - 2484 - 43.57
    4: 158 - 7527 - 51.55
    5:   35 - 2085 - 67.25
    6:    8 -    241 - 40.17
    7:    1 -        0 -   0.00

It's not as if 3 is a position that is foreign to him either (22% of all innings as opposed to 58% at 4) and his average opening is better than both of our current incumbents too. There again, I don't think we should show him the above because he might demand to bat at 5

  • New ball due in six overs so can't see Brook and Stokes hanging about
  • The Barmy Army trumpeter is very near the crowd microphones!
  • The Barmy Army trumpeter is very near the crowd microphones!
At least they have microphones. There was a break-in at the ground overnight - the culprits cut through the wire fences and stole a couple of cameras from the talksport box and a load of stuff from the venue including laptops and beers. Not sure how much they'll get for second hand beers on the open market but you never know what members of the Barmy Army might be prepared to pay.

    Was it Steve Harmison?
  • Brook dropped for the fifth time and NZ's seventh drop of the innings
  • We lead by two runs

    350-5 (81)
  • 152*-5 for Brook (186)

  • 51* (105) for Stokes
  • Harry Brook is some player
  • Brook caught behind for a superb 171 (197) trying to run the ball down

    381-6
  • NZ have finally found that their hands are capable of catching - Latham pouches Woakes at slip off Southee

    382-7
  • Gus Atkinson making his play to bat at No 3 in the second innings
  • A rapid 48 (36) for Atkinson before he eventually holes out

    445-8 and a lead of 97 runs

    Stokes 708 (131)

  • 6 an over in that session is very impressive.

The advantage of the Bazball style is that we're now well on our way to 500 and a big lead.
  • 459-8 (97) at lunch and a lead of Nelson proportions

    Stokes 78* (138)
    Carse 5* (5)
  • 499 all out

  • Great catch by Atkinson. 23-2
  • 64-3. Carse has a second
  • Woakes jags one back to get Williamson lbw for 61 who reluctantly reviews and impact was umpires call so they keep review
next ball Tom Blundell nicks one behind for a golden and Woakes is on a hatrick

    NZ 133-5
    18 behind
  • No hatrick

Three for Woakes and now three for Carse

155-6 and NZ lead by 4 at stumps.
  • This test match is shaping to become a prime example of the old adage 'catches win matches.'

New Zealand had us on the ropes yet now they are effectively 4-6 in their second innings.
  • Looks like this Test is done. We'll be lucky to get 200 at this rate.
Sorry I haven't been back to this thread, I've been busy making a batch of humble pies 🥧
You presented them to the New Zealand players, but unfortunately they dropped them all.
  • Carse takes the wickets of Smith and Henry but Stokes has injured himself bowling

    193-8 & lead of 42
  • Five in the innings and nine in the match to Carse.
