England's risk in playing Hull in place of Potts didn't help today either. Bowlers do need some mileage in their legs to become battle hardened, and Hull's inexperience and lack of physical "toughness" did show.
England's aggregate results each Summer 2024 (West Indies and Sri Lanka) 5-1 2023 (Ireland and Australia) 3-2 2022 (NZ, India, South Africa) 6-1 2021 (NZ, India) 2-2 2020 (West Indies, Pakistan) 3-1 2019 (Ireland, Australia) 3-2 2018 (Pakistan, India) 5-2 2017 (South Africa, West Indies) 5-2 2016 (Sri Lanka, Pakistan) 4-2 2015 (West Indies, NZ, Australia) 5-4 2014 (Sri Lanka, India) 4-1 2013 (New Zealand, Australia) 5-0 2012 (West Indies, South Africa) 4-0 2011 (Sri Lanka, India) 5-0 2010 (Bangladesh, Pakistan) 5-1 2009 (West Indies, Australia) 4-1
This year's Test record (WWWWWL) compares well with most of the last fifteen Summers, as far back as the great team of 2010-2013 (Strauss, Cook, Trott, Pietersen, Bell, Swann, Broad, Anderson et al).
Didn't England lose the 2012 series to South Africa? Not sure how that’s 4-0.
Two spinners have bowled for Somerset against Surrey returning figures, to date, of 15-4-39-0 and 11-3-14-2. The man responsible for the former is 33 year old England international Jack Leach and the other is someone 15 years his junior by the name of Archie Vaughan who also opened the batting and scored 44 off 107 balls - an opening bat who bowls off spin by the name of Vaughan. The apple really doesn't fall far from the tree sometimes.

Both him & Rocky Flintoff look like promising players.
I was in a way happy to see that Sri Lanka had a relatively small target to aim for in the last innings. Wanted to see how we get on trying to stifle and get them out in the field whilst under pressure. Well we didn't.
Still at least Coldplay aren't number 1 every week.
I think we can safely say that the experiment of Lawrence opening is one of the few that hasn't worked for McCullum
I think that was sort of the plan really. He gets a go having been the spare bat for ages but now can’t have any complaints if an opener is brought in in front of him in future. Never any chance we’d lose the series so worth the punt just in case it worked
Lawrence isn't worth his place in the squad. With Stokes returning, presumably Cox will be the spare middle order batsman but they will also have to take someone who is capable of batting up top. That probably will have to be another "punt" too.
So Cox is the back up opener and middle order batsman?
Interesting that Woakes is being given another go as a tourist. Can see him doing well if he gets to NZ but can see Atkinson and Potts being more dangerous in Pakistan

The back up keeper as well!
A weird situation where the 2 openers are basically undroppable, as you can't see England choosing to leave either of them out if they struggle.

Root seemed a bit annoyed when Agnew said he could not remember when Coldplay were last number one. Bit of a weird analogy!!
I still think it's a risk taking Josh Hull tbh. He needs a full season of county cricket under his belt before playing test matches abroad. If he's picked for the Ashes tour I reckon they will destroy him Only positive I can see in taking him is he will gain good experience of what touring is about. I wish him well.
Relying on Saqib,Jofra and Topley to stay fit is a gamble in itself. Even the likes of Bethall can bowl part time spin even if in that lineup it won't be needed.
Feels like you could switch Overton for an out and out batsman and not lose anything.
One to watch for the future - 17 year old Harry Moore and England U19 who looks like he's going to be a real handful for batters in years to come. Made his FC debut for Derbyshire this week against Northants and returned 10-5-16-1 opening the bowling in the first innings and to date has 6-3-6-2 in the second innings.

Moore has finished his bowling with match figures of 20-9-32-3. Incredibly consistent performance for a 17 year old making his CC debut
Charlie Archie( ) Vaughan now has 6 wickets! Poor old Jack Leach, first losing his England place to his teammate Bashir, and now being outshone by someone even younger

Archie (Charlie Vaughan played for Charlton) out bowled and out batted Shakib Al Hasan too. He's probably on the same money for his season's rookie contract as Shakib is for his one game for Surrey!

What type of bowler is he? I’m guessing he’s probably still at least a couple of years away from full international recognition but does he have the pace / height that the selectors are wanting?

Right arm seamer, definitely tall enough but difficult to tell how quick but he's certainly hurried a few of the opposition batters and is only 17 so plenty of time to fill his frame yet

Potts would have strengthened the batting too.

I imagine Essex fans will be amused by Lawrence being left out.

Great start from the convicts.
Great reply from England
