Football team's 8,000 mile round trip ends in 12-0 defeat

A football team from Martinique which made an 8,000 mile round-trip to play a cup tie in France lost the match 12-0.

Golden Lion are the reigning champions on the island, an overseas region of France in the Caribbean, and one of several teams from outside the country to enter the French cup. Unfortunately for them, they were drawn against Lille, from Ligue 1, the French first division, in the round of 64. And there was no fairytale upset, as Lion failed to roar, getting mauled 12-0 by the former French champions in Saturday's game.

Would love an FA cup away day in Bermuda
  • The winner of the French Cup qualify for Europe. Googling this the idea of winning it with a club from one of France’s overseas territories has come up as an idea for an FM save several times.

Unfortunately it seems they’re not allowed to play in European competitions. Assume that’s based on the real rules but if it happened in real life it would be interesting to see if it’s challenged at all.

They got to play a French Cup match in a 50k seater stadium that's held Champions League & Euros matches, RWC matches, and where the French national team have played.

Rather than and lost 12-0 than play a random Ligue 2 team etc and lose 4-0 or whatever.

So The Valley is worth 1,000 times more than Lille's ground?
  • @oohaahmortimer Any idea what Golden Lion's away numbers were like?
