Nah, he wasn't the Wrexham player that hammered his goalline clearance against the goalie's back for the first Chelsea equaliser, so not quite every single requirement. But comparison is the thief of joy, so why not just enjoy Coventry's performance without worrying about how a former player's doing now?Leuth said:

A lot of our play goes through him. Yes, he often plays sideways or backwards, but as was mentioned earlier in this thread, he is the only midfielder who consistently shows for the ball. We also have very little movement in the channels, so there simply aren’t many options available to him.He makes a lot of tackles and interceptions and generally shields the defence well. He is very important to the way we set up. If we can add more quality in midfield and more movement ahead of him, I’m sure we’ll get even more out of him.I watched Wrexham play against us the other week and again yesterday against Chelsea, and I think the same applies to them: they have a good defensive midfielder in Dobson, but they also have quality around him with players like O’Brien, Rathbone and Windass.2

I don’t really understand the sideways and backwards criticism. Coventry may err on the side of caution, but that is likely what he's being asked to do and what most of his peers in that position do.For the last few weeks most have bemoaned the route one football - just playing it forward hopelessly without attempting to build up. Coventry is in there to keep the ball ticking over and help us set up better situations to go forward. That’s without mentioning his stellar work breaking up the play and stifling the opposition. That is the remit of his position, so I think it’s relatively lazy criticism to be honest.10

Conor Coventry sits down with CharltonTV's Charlotte Richardson on St Patrick's Day for an in-depth interview.4 -
No Coventry in the Ireland squad for their upcoming Play Off fixtures at the end of this month2
-
Effectively replaced by Harvey Vale who I believe has recently switched his allegiances so he’s eligible0

Thats a pity, was looking forward to see him play in Prague next week. It also means I have even less excuse not to be supporting the Czechs for this one, my wife was giving me pelters already for equivocating. She wasnt impressed with the Charlton player argument. She doesnt understand…shirty5 said:No Coventry in the Ireland squad for their upcoming Play Off fixtures at the end of this month

Disappointing he's not in the squad but not overly surprised. Heimir doesn't seem to particularly rate him1

. We need him rested and refreshed for next season . Disappointed for him personally but purely on a self basis I’m happy.3

The dentist is an eejit. But I'm not unhappy from a CAFC perspective.
Gutted for Conor though.2 -
Seems he's only ever played 22 minutes for the Ireland senior team. Thought he'd featured more than that.0

One of best mid players outside prem .. again unfortunately does not play for a noticeable club .. might come a time when he feels he has to move to play in a major tournament which is wrong6
-
Gutted for him. I think he's class. If they make the World Cup, I hope he makes their squad.7

Good news . Him and Carey are knackered - 2 weeks off0

You’ve today claimed that we’ve got one of the best midfielders and one of the best goal-scorers outside of The Prem.RonnieMoore said:One of best mid players outside prem .. again unfortunately does not play for a noticeable club .. might come a time when he feels he has to move to play in a major tournament which is wrong
Your Wind-Ups are becoming more and more of a struggle!6 -
So good that 7 other championship midfielders were picked ahead of him. He’s a decent player but he’s not been robbed not getting called upRonnieMoore said:One of best mid players outside prem .. again unfortunately does not play for a noticeable club .. might come a time when he feels he has to move to play in a major tournament which is wrong5 -

Sadly for Coventry, Coady showed today that our midfielders aren't under instruction to hit passes with poor weighting.

As great as today was, we need significant surgery for next season. The truth is the midfield for enormous swathes of the season hasn’t been good enough and needs significant upgrades._uptheaddicks said:Sadly for Coventry, Coady showed today that our midfielders aren't under instruction to hit passes with poor weighting.5 -
With how much hype and promise he had coming in, have to say I'm a little disappointed in the production from him this and last season.6
-
End of the day picked him up on a free and did his job helping us get promoted last season. Hasn’t quite stepped up this year but no harm keeping him as a squad option for next year.SELR_addicks said:With how much hype and promise he had coming in, have to say I'm a little disappointed in the production from him this and last season.Considering how West Ham apparently hold a massive sell on seen rumours up to 50% they were asking for originally when he looked set to move to Wednesday, in no desperation to cash in this summer3 -
I really liked Coventry last season, and still do, but he must be done here.
He was on the bench yesterday, and Greg Docherty was absolutely crocked for the last minutes of the game, and Jones still didn't bring him on.
I wonder where it all went wrong cause he was one of the very few I thought had a chance to improve and step up.4 -
All 3 subs opportunities were used, so the 5th substitution could not be taken upBraziliance said:I really liked Coventry last season, and still do, but he must be done here.

I don't believe he came on yesterday as we used our 3 substitute 'opportunities'.
A likeable chap.
In the Championship, you need at least one of the following traits in your midfield players - leadership, physical prowess, pace, decent dribbling ability, or passing range.

I think two things happened this year that hampered him. Playing through hip injury and Ireland uncertainty. Both must have really messed with his head and to me he looks like someone playing without confidence3
-
He's been involved in 40 games this season, he's certainly played his part. Coady has come in and shown his experience, which we've needed, but I don't think it means Coventry's time here is done.6

Fair enough. Still think he seems out of favour.1
