Naby Sarr 2.0. Hated at first, before becoming good. Ping of a left foot, big mistake in him, stands over free kicks. Just awaiting the own goal at Wembley in May
    Or Laurie Wilson.
  • Macca was genuinely made up when we presented his MOM award. You could tell it meant a lot - and he spent some decent time chatting to my son. Said the spirit in the squad is the best he has ever been part of and all in all comes across as a thoroughly good bloke.
Not heard that line before, hopefully it is true in this case.

    I'm sure it is.
Unless he was actually asked "how is the spirit in the squad" he'd have no reason to say it.
  • What a character arc!
  • You have to give credit where it's due, I've been critical of him this season but he's been brilliant in the last few games. He's clearly got ability but seems like a confidence player, I really hope he kicks on for the rest of the season.

Special mention to how shy he was getting the plaudits last night, he seems like a lovely lad.

Used to be shite now he’s alright walking in a Macca wonderland!

For the record I’ve always thought he was a decent enough defender at the level

Great to hear all that..... thank you for sharing  :)

    Credit where it’s due
a whole game without a serious error
    that’s progress
his recent trajectory has been upward
    a workinprogress
he’s still massively in debt on the goals conceded v scored/saved ledger
here’s to more games like today
I'm not sure how many of his mistakes have led to goals being conceded....
That's a very good question! We have one of the best defences we've had for years and don't really concede. Yeah, he fucked up at Blackpool but I'm struggling to think of another error leading to a goal?
  • Last time he spent a full season in
league one he got promoted, the season before he was part of a team that had the 5th best defensive record.

Not saying he’s a world beater - but he is nowhere near as bad as people made out.
  • I did say 3 months ago Macauley Gillesphey may become a cult figure at CAFC; despite his improved form if he makes a bad mistake in a playoff match, cult may become altered.

  • I was surprised when I heard Macca G speak as I thought he was going to speak in a west Country accent but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Strong North east accent sounding more Geordie than Mackem but not Newcastle but the Old Mining centre of Ashington 15 miles North of the Geordie City.

"Not a lot of people know this" but Pitmatic is the local Dialect and now Macauley Gillesphey joins the likes of Jackie Milburn, Bobby and Jackie Charlton, in the Ashington football hall of fame !

Cricketers Steve and Ben Harmison and the person who I thought Gillesphey sounds like, Mark Wood all hail from Ashington.

Follow the fantasy points. Players don't end up top of the marks on stats by accident.

He started off awful and very clumsy, there was no other way of looking at it tbh.

Last few months he's completely turned it around.

Top of the scores over every league1 club. The 24th highest rated player on the most renowned stats site and I think the 11th highest rated centre back in this league currently.
  • Long may it continue as I am quite liking humble pie with HP sauce
  • i hadn’t realised he was a Geordie until I heard his post match interview. From Ashington like the Charlton brothers.
  • Have always thought he got a bit of unfair stick, but like our dear Naby, I suspect he is definitely one of those cb's that looks really good in a decent team and really bad in a poor one.

His combination of being decent on the ball but a bit slow, means that when the team's positioning isn't good around him, he can misplace a pass or dawdle on the ball too much. But, when he has consistent players around him who know their positions, he knows how to find them quickly and effectively.

His positioning and read of the game is good and he has a good relationship with Edwards and Jones.

He will always be susceptible to pace and balls in behind which is where the defence needs to work as a team to cover.
  • comparing Macca to Naby is a sacrilege.  Naby’s outstanding plays were significantly better and his mistakes were much worse
Macca just has to get sent off one minute into a game to equal Naby.

Why was you presenting MOM award @DamoNorthStand

Gillesphey is better in the air than Sarr and Sarr MUCH better than Gillesphey on the deck.

Sarr was poor in the air, genuinely poor considering his height and general size.

Reminds me of Leaburn a bit in that sense, if you're over 6'4 you should be leaving people for dead in the air. Sarr always looked a bit weak against tougher centre forwards.

But we will always have that cross against Nottingham Forest to remember him by (scored by the snake)..... Perfection.

Helps he's not being asked to try 7103 diagonal long balls a match now, think that made him an easy scapegoat.

Possibly he's a victim of a bit of his own myth - everyone knows/says "he's got a massive mistake in him" so every time he makes any kind of error (even a relatively minor one) it gets elevated to Major Mistake instead of just being expected that even the best of L1 CBs are going to make the odd slip.

He's deserved that goal - and he's now scored just as many as L. Jones this season and has two more assists to his name as well.

Not going to win POTS but if there was a "most improved" award he'd surely be a shoe-in.
    Exactly this.

If it was him who gave away the penalty last night I'm sure there'd be plenty of noise on here about him being 'clumsy' and criticism 'yet another Gillesphey error'. Same if it was him who played the awful pass on Saturday that put Stevenage clean through (thankfully AMB made a superb save).

Yet because those instances were Ramsay and Edwards respectively there's very little criticism and more acceptance that sometimes these things happen, quite right too - it’s L1 after all. If we had players incapable of making errors they wouldn't be playing at this level.
In spades. Combine his qualities with consistent faultless performance and he isn’t playing in League 1!

There was great entertainment value in Naby, could go from looking like Beckenbaur to looking like a Beckenham town player in the blink of an eye!

I know what you mean. Sarr wasn't the strongest in open play but he did score a few headers; Crystal Palace, Huddersfield and Derby come to mind.

Lloyd Jones is very strong in the air but seemingly hasn't scored as many headers yet. Let's hope he starts to do so, as that could make a big difference to us.

Lloyd Jones is from Plymouth, but doesn't sound at all yokely!

LJ is a master of the art of 'permissible middle of the pitch wrestling' to get ahead of the opposing player, or get a clearer path to heading the ball. Unfortunately relativity principles apply to the laws of the game and he I don't think he can get away with the same approach in the opposing box for a corner
