Good player and wish we had kept him, but not irreplaceable4

Hope he fails now tbf. He wasn't our best player but was one of the fans favourites and he will definitely regret this move. Before Jones converted him to LWB/LW, he was our back up right back to Edwards don't forget.
Sad to see him go but we can hopefully replace with someone with a better end product.3 -

I guess you need to discern between will we not pay 10,000+ a week for any player, or for Small, because we don’t rate him as worth that - as they are two very different things.Braziliance said:

I hope Thierry doesnt regret it either then, as he's seemingly chased the money a few times in his career - I dont say that bitterly either, I genuinely hope he goes on to have a great career, but his decisions have been a tad questionable.Braziliance said:Sat on that for a week, never ITK but was told by two different people that Preston were offering Thierry between 10-11k a week to sign him and that he already agreed to it in the last week.
I didn't want to say incase they were wrong, but once I read all the Preston fans say about their offer, and how likely he was to accept it, all the dots joined up, and is why I was saying we aren't paying the going rate, specifically for him.
Apparently we couldn't get near what they were offering, or at least we weren't willing to match it. Had we offered Thierry what they did, he would have stayed. It was just about money from what I have heard.
I'm gutted personally as he has so much resale value, he fit in with the team, and he was a good player for us.
Good luck to him, shame.
Agree about the resale value, for FFP to count so much now, losing a player like him on compensation is a big blow.
It is why I was a bit gung-ho on the wages cause I was told that was the major stumbling block. It's why I also keep saying top league 1 players will be the strategy, if we can't afford to pay Thierry that, it's given me the impression that will be the theme for this window.FishCostaFortune said:
Thanks for sharing. I’m not sure I think he’s worth that much per week to be honest - so I don’t necessarily blame ‘the board’ (and I’m sure NJ would have had a say in it as well. But as you mention, he may have ended up getting us a massive sell on.Braziliance said:Sat on that for a week, never ITK but was told by two different people that Preston were offering Thierry between 10-11k a week to sign him and that he already agreed to it in the last week.

As ever time will tell.
If Small reverts back to the mean of his pre Charlton career, just like CBT did, then it’s a massive waste of money by PNE.
Great business by Preston, the funny thing is, a lot of their lot don't even believe it would have happened unless we played them in the FA cup. It was that performance that made them persist, typical if that really is the case.
Jones has always maintained that we will come out of each transfer window stronger, and so far he has proven to be right with that. So let’s hope that trend prevails.7 -

He was always moving at the end of his contract .. when he joined he said this was stepping stone for him had no intention of being long term player strange team to join cause they could get relegated next season … as I said we can do betterBraziliance said:Sat on that for a week, never ITK but was told by two different people that Preston were offering Thierry between 10-11k a week to sign him and that he already agreed to it in the last week.

Could go on to win an England cap, or end up at Walsall.SOTF said:Well that’s that then.
Definitely a player that keeps you on the edge of your seat with plenty of potential, but prone to lapses in concentration and does need coaching through games.
It will be interesting to see how he gets on.1 -
Shame he didn’t sign good luck Thierry just not when you play us. Dan Agyei the Orient Winger could be a good replacement.2

This is my thoughts exactly. Keeping hold of Ramsey & Lloyd Jones is the most important thing for me3 -
            Plus he a northern lad….4

Anyone know what we got for him? Cawley confirmed we would be due compensation as his under a certain age0
 -
He doesn’t learn. He can stay somewhere he’s fitted in, and the place that salvaged his career. Or he can chase the dollar again.Fun player to watch at times but incredibly frustrating at others. And I won’t miss his comedic heading ability which was worse than a 50p head 😃
hope he fails spectacularly14 -

Part of our promotion, lots of strength, skill, lots of potential, but I’d hope we could fill that slot with higher quality now we’re in the championship. It always felt to me like he could never quite create chances into goals, but no doubt he’ll unlock that when he faces us next year.1

Very sorry to see him go. Raw talent and exciting to watch. I’m not being mealy mouthed here but he’s made a bad decision. Preston arnt going anywhere any time soon and Jones is about the only manager that has got Thierry playing to his potential. I think he’d progress under Jones and might again fail to impress given a different role and under more scrutiny. Enjoy the money Thierry.4

It's not like how young players left under Roland. Until six months ago he hadn't done much for Charlton. When he/we started to play well, his contract was reaching it's end.Diebythesword said:No end product but clearly a nightmare for defenders, was a real threat. Ridiculous to have got to the point where a 20 year old goes on a free. Definitely would’ve rather he stayed, we’d have to spend a bit of money to get a good enough replacement.0 -
Got a feeling seeing that Reebok hoodie convinced him to go?15

Charlton is his career. He never started for Everton or Southampton. And had a few appearances on loan at Port Vale & St Mirren as a teenager. Sounds like they are gambling a first teamer’s wages on him coming good over next four years. If he does, could make a few million on him.FishCostaFortune said:Braziliance said:Sat on that for a week, never ITK but was told by two different people that Preston were offering Thierry between 10-11k a week to sign him and that he already agreed to it in the last week.

That's what I mean, I don't know about that and I don't think many will, I just got told about Thierry specifically with not matching Prestons offer and it being roughly 3-4k a week more, whether that was a Jones decision, only the insiders will know.FishCostaFortune said:

He got it right with replacing May, let's hope he can do it again. Plenty of good players out there to replace him.4 -

No hard feelings, we got him for nowt and will likely pick up a small development fee. Decent player with massive potential but could go either way. For every bit of real quality there are 2-3 times he randomly runs the ball off the pitch.
Just seems a daft move for him tbh, will no doubt make him richer but it's barely a step up and I think there is a good chance we will finish above them next season anyway.
I feel he should have stayed with us where the fans were 100% behind him and had a settled year to really establish himself.6 -

If this is true (and i don't doubt it is) then i read this as NJ deciding he's not worth it.Braziliance said:Sat on that for a week, never ITK but was told by two different people that Preston were offering Thierry between 10-11k a week to sign him and that he already agreed to it in the last week.

I'm sure NJ and the club know that we're going to have to pay that kind of salary to get decent players at this level, and i'm sure if NJ felt he was worth it then the board would've backed him to match Preston's offer. If for example it was Lloyd Jones, i don't doubt we'd have offered it.
So i take this as Jones/Chapple deciding we can replace him and better to spend that kind of wage elsewhere.10
