My mate's car wouldn't start last night outside ours. Headlights still worked and radio so don't think it was battery. Just every time he turned key just a loud clicking.
Clueless when it comes to motors so any ideas would be gratefully received.
2016 Vauxhall Corsa VXR if that helps.
Thanks
If it's got power and clicking then almost certainly stater motor, sometimes a whack with a hammer (on the starter motor) will bring into life, but it'll go again, bump start it as you may have drained the battery trying.
Used to have a lump of wood in my old Ford Escort, specifically to give the starter motor a whack lol
I do love some of the comments on here, "If it's clicking it's definitely the starter motor, if it's clicking it's definitely the alternator, if it's clicking it's definitely the solenoid".
If a battery has some power (say, 10 volts) the lights will come on (dimly) and the radio will work, but simply not enough power to turn the starter. If he listened to all the comments on here he would've replaced everything under the bonnet, 4 new tyres and had a full respray. 🤣

It’s to hit the starter motor officer, honestly.
Indeed. Many, many years ago I got pulled up very late at night in my old Anglia Van that was really my Dad's company van but I drove it. (For some reason I was always getting stopped.) One of the plod's long list of stupid questions was "what's in the back?" Me: Let's have a look, well there's a bolt cutter, a crow bar, a sledge hammer, a kango hammer, a welding mask, an oxy acetylene torch, some gas bottles and other stuff. Plod: Okay, sir, off you go!

Then after paying out for all that, he had to sell it.

First sensible comment on this thread!
The hardest work a battery will do is turn over an engine. Radio and lights use much less power. I'm going to guess the battery is just old.
(Old banger!) car had it's MOT earlier today, then has gone very wrong tonight - glow plug warning light, 'check engine', 'stop/start' issue, loss of power and very juddery.
Obviously will need towing to the garage to take a look, but does anyone know - do garages check that sort of part of the engine as part of the MOT, could it be related?
The MOT is a safety check so the condition of the engine isn't really a factor.
Not sure why a bad glow plug would cause the engine to run badly; glow plugs are just used to heat up the air and fuel coming into the engine prior to the engine starting. Assuming the car is 1996 or newer, it's worth investing in an OBD2 code reader to give you a sense of the problem.

Think it will most probably be the battery, have you got some jump leads?
Winner. It was the battery as he's jumped it this morning and all sorted.
Cheers all
Bugger!

I had one, my first new car 1.2 Swing! 45 hp of unbridled power.

Or is it more likely coincidence on an old car?

And yeah 2011.
and then again in 1955…
notorious on those models in that year
