Best cover for me, by far and away is It's My Life by No Doubt originally by Talk Talk

The bass is absolutely mesmerising and one of my favourite bass sounds on any song, never get tired of it, and what a singer Gwen Stefani is, love a bit of No Doubt.

After that, No Easy Way out cover by Bullet for my Valentine. A fantastic homeage to Robert Tepper. Maybe not better, but certainly a great cover for me.

Then I'd say Guns N' Roses cover of Live and Let Die by the Wings. Just think the pacing of the song is a lot better and the tempo throughout is fantastic. Although it has to be said, The Wings version really is a masterpiece and probably my favourite Bond song tied with Duran Durans, A View to a Kill. Although, a James Bond themes is probably worth a whole new thread on its own. What a selection to choose from.

Sure there's plenty more on my playlists, but those are my standout 3 top of my head
  • Dolly Parton's version of Stairway to Heaven is better than than that dreadful screaming "original" (actually stolen by Page as proved in court)
    'Fraid not Henry...

Led Zeppelin have won a court appeal over their iconic song Stairway To Heaven, which was accused of ripping off another band. The 9th US Circuit Court of the Appeals restored a jury verdict that found Led Zeppelin had not stolen the song's opening riff from the band Spirit.

The estate of Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe, who passed away in 1997, claimed Stairway to Heaven had violated the copyright of a 1968 song called Taurus....

  • This Mortal Coil's "Song to the Siren" is better than Tim Buckley's
Bloody hell reading this on the train & 2 mins ago just thought of This Mortal Coil. Great version can't think of the singers name off hand.
Liz Fraser, who was in the Cocteau Twins, and is Scott Fraser's aunt.
She was good in Carry On films as well

The people on the jury knew.

Addickted (god bless him), will be poking his tongue out at you Henry.

He's not alone on that one either...🙄

    And you're all wrong.  B)
  • Not better but equally brilliant

The Cowboy Junkies strung out version of the Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane from the Trinity Sessions.

Was covered by a fine version by The Pink Fairies who added lyrics.
Version below, Walk Don’t Run starts after one minute.

  • Aretha .. R E S P E C T
  • Aine O'Boyle's version of Richard Thompson's 'Beeswing' is a curious one because she inverts the lyrics so it is the female perspective rather than the male. Of course her gentle piano is no match for Thompson's glorious guitar but it's well worth a look.
  • Alien ant farm’s version of smooth criminal anyone?
  • Roadrunner by The Modern Lovers is a great song, but the Jazz Butcher's version is miles better.
  • The one time when Neil Diamond paid a tribute to John Lennon at a live concert - Golden Slumbers
  • Let’s spend the night together / Sorrow. David Bowie
    Jealous Guy. Bryan Ferry
    Eloise. The Damned
    Golden Opportunity. Down n Outz

That's a Paul McCartney song, or am I missing something?

    Certainly McCartney.

Well exactly, so how a tribute to John Lennon?

You can dedicate a song to anyone. Lennon had only been dead a few years when Diamond recorded the medley.

Don't know about the others but Eloise is a great shout.

Well quite, but then the  reference to Lennon is irrelevant in the context of this thread which is "covers better than the original" where the poster is using the example of a Paul McCartney song.

  • Don't Turn Around - Aswad
    New Dawn Fades - Moby
  • May have been mentioned before, 999's version of Lil Red Riding Hood.
  • edited November 4
My current favourite is Paul Wellers version of Billie Eilish. It’s totally unexpected and a cracker.

  • The Beach Boys version of Sloop John B. A song used by endless football chants, e.g.

I wanna go home, I wanna go home. Wigan's a sh*thole I wanna to go home.

Bowyer had a dream, to build a football team. He had no money so he had to sign them on loan etc

  • The best ever cover version imo is
     The Loved One by INXS

I wouldn’t claim that any of these are ’better’ but they are versions not yet mentionned I really like:

Lithium (Nirvana) by The Polyphonic Spree

The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore by Keane
    - I don’t like to say better but I do think that Tom Chaplin sings it so well

An Arrow in the Wall by Churches (not really a cover entirely  (of a Death Cab for Cutie song)

Fall on Me (REM) by Death Cab for Cutie

Love is all Around Me by REM (I just love Mike Mills’s backing vocals)

    #9 Dream by REM

Feels like Heaven (Fiction Factory) by Roosevelt

The Fool On The Hill by Sig Ragga

    Eleanor Rigby by Pomplamousse

Neil Diamond covered a Beatles song and dedicated it to John Lennon.

    You're over thinking it.
