  • His most famous charecter possibly named after someone who later played for Charlton.
  • Wasn’t Hazel written by Terry Venables ?

    Yes around 78-79.

I think TV co-wrote the books rather than the screenplays - but I'm sure they were close.

Some of my fondest memories of 70s TV drama were Hazell and Budgie - loved them both (maybe a London thing!). Loved his Triumph Stag as well.

    RIP Nicholas
  • Would often see them filming by my primary school - Columbia Road (where the flower market is)

    Rip Nicholas

I vaguely remember Venables saying that the personality traits were indeed based on Tony Hazell who El Tel played with at QPR and managed at Crystal Palace.

Liked the series, struggling Private investigator,/debt collector with a heavy dose of sentiment. I think there were 3 books, which were a great  light read. He drove a Triumph stag in the series which a few of my friends brothers had, but were a  bit of a pain, with over heating!. Not sure the series aged that well, when I saw a few episodes  a couple of years ago.Think he played in several roles on tv, but nearly always as a supporting actor.

Problem with Stags was an engine block made of Iron but a cylinder head made from Aluminium - you had to use the right type of antifreeze, all year round - if you didn’t, the engine would build up sludge inside, and ultimately the head gasket would fail

Yes - that's why so many were refitted with the Rover 3.5 V8

Played gang lord Terry Bates in BBC soap EastEnders, who attacked Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) while smashing up the Queen Victoria pub, and in the drama Footballers’ Wives took on the role of the chairman of the club and ex-rock star Garry Ryan.

Ball also appeared in episodes of crime shows Jonathan Creek, Hustle, Heartbeat and Bergerac along with comedies Red Dwarf and The Young Ones and drama The Crezz.

He also had roles in small and big screen films including war drama Overlord, thriller Rogue Male, crime drama The Krays: Dead Man Walking and Jilly Cooper adaptation The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.

Ball recently filmed the 2024 rural-set drama The Kingdom By The Sea, opposite actress Rula Lenska.

The film was previewed last month as a surprise birthday party.
  • Bloody hell.
I met him 12th March 2008 (just looked it up) when our day at the Cheltenahm Festival was cancelled due to high winds.
We went drinking in London instead and met him in a Paddington pub.
I got home later than if we'd actually gone to Cheltenham.
    RIP Nicholas.
  • Hazel was great. Sorry to hear this news. RIP
