Talk of games getting called off this weekend…

With the step up in police presence required around town centres across the country, there’s talk of a few games being called off this weekend.

Hopefully no protests planned in Wigan over the next few days…

Doubt it'll get called off. You'll see pockets of repeat offenders but won't be to the scale of last weekend.

The only thing you'll notice is a bit of a drop off in some northern football team's attendances.

Nothing wrong with lawful protest but all I’ve seen on the screens in the last few days is extreme thuggish hooliganism from people who don’t seem to have the intelligence they were born with.

If there is the possibility of that happening on Saturday, postpone the match.
  • I can’t see the game going ahead at Wigan this weekend. Northern cities are going to need all their police resources.

Mods! Mods! Get rid of this thread! This isn't something we should be talking about! La la la everything's lovely
No need if people can demonstrate some self control and stick to updates regarding the possibility of disruption to games rather than the political dimension.

  • How much trouble is there going to be at Wigan ?  Hardly a "problem" match is it ! I reckon you could police it with a few men & a whippet.

A few extra stewards would do the trick. As at the weekend we've sold 600 tickets.

    Too many nervous ninnies.
Games are ranked according to risk.

I'd guess Wigan v Charlton wouldn't be high risk but we''ve got ourselves a bit of an unwanted reputation in recent years so there will be a minimum number of police needed.

While extra stewards might be good enough for the stadium, police would be required at the train station, on route to the ground, in pubs, etc.

Hopefully, the swift arrests and sentencing will deter most rioters but police, ambulance and fire service (my niece's husband is a watch commander at Southport Fire Station) need to be prepared so if something has to give it might be football games.

A real shame if ordinary peaceful fans miss out due to others lllegal and violent behaviour but better safe than sorry.
While our focus is understandably on our match at Wigan, there will doubtless be many other matches due to take place on Saturday all across the country.  Added together this may well in the circumstances, where "normal" crimes are going uninvestigated due to police shortages, be an unacceptable use of limited personnel.

Also, if the police are out "spotting" (ie looking for known far-right trouble makers) at travel hubs such as stations, it will help if there are fewer passengers criss-crossing the country because sporting events have been cancelled.
  • Peter Varney tweeted that he is hearing that it is increasingly likely that there will be significant cancellations to EFL matches this weekend, as the police need to concentrate their resources to deal with the violence and protect town and city centres. You have to think, for example, that the game at Middlesbrough could be at risk.

Policing a very low risk Wigan v Charlton game isn't an issue but the problem is having to divert local Wigan police to places like Liverpool. I remember our League Cup game against Reading at the Valley in August 2011 being postponed, so that officers could be deployed elsewhere at trouble spots in London during those riots.

Let's hope that things calm down and that the authorities come down on both the instigators and the perpetrators of this violent thuggery like a ton of bricks.

I'm told that, as it stands, our game should be fine but those requiring significant resources may well suffer especially those outside of London.
  • surely all the rioters will be at the football ?.......;)
