Ron Yeats RIP

Legendary former Liverpool captain Ron Yeats has died at the age of 86.

The ex-Scotland defender was part of the Liverpool side that won the Second Division title in 1962, before going on to win two top-flight titles, the FA Cup and the Charity Shield three times.

He played 454 games before joining Tranmere in 1971.

More than 400 of those appearances were as captain, a tally bettered only by Steven Gerrard.

He did, indeed, together with the Flying Pig, Tommy Lawrence.

0-0 at The Valley and they thumped us 4-0 in the replay.

Big man for his time. Shankly used to say that he wore long sleeved shirts but as he was so well built they looked like short sleeved shirts.

He also played for Liverpool at The Valley when they won Div 2. They won 4-0 that day and I can remember most of their team. Forward line (i think) of Callaghan, Hunt, St John, Melia and A’Court.
