Ahh, that's sad news. Sort of came out of nowhere for Italia 90 and ended up with the golden boot. Proper fox-in-the-box type if I remember rightly.

    RIP Toto.
  • A legend from the first world cup i can remember. He only ever scored 7 goals for Italy and 6 were in that world cup.

    RIP.
  • I was only reading about him recently. Sad news, RIP Toto.
  • RIP, Italia 90 was all about him and the emergence of Baggio for me.  Other than England that is, oh and Roger Milla's dancing.
  • My first real memories of a WC, and I vividly remember seeing him celebrate after scoring made me want to go and play football in the garden. Really sad to hear this news.
  • Archetypal great Italian player, tough, skillful and not a stanger to the black arts!

    RIP
  • He will always be one of the first names that I recall when thinking about International Football. He made such a name for himself in the World Cup, he made a cult hero status for himself around the world for just that competition it was unbelievable
  • RIP

Even had a t shirt made for him after scoring and knocking Ireland out of WC90. It made an appearance in the film “The van.”
  • RIP . Great striker during 1990 . Probably my favourite tournament ever

  • Some of my earliest footballing memories were from that world cup and from that man.

    RIP fella
  • So sad, and no age.

For that glorious summer of 1990, 'Toto' was the best striker in the world - playing with great skill and incredible passion.

    SCHILLACI!!!!!!

    Rest in Peace, Toto.
  • Synonymous with the tournament where I first fell in love with football. I was very young and as I grew older and wiser I learned to hate the beautiful game! Came out of nowhere to play a major role in the world cup his country was hosting. Unfortunately injuries at the tournament would affect his career and there wasn't a great deal that happened afterwards.

    R.I.P.
  • One of the names I'd shout while pulling the trigger as a kid.

    RIP

    I love that film!!!!

    This is so sad 😞
Italia 90 was just so memorable for me. Not long started work, preparing to leave home, secretly wishing I used the money to buy an Italia 90 Fiat 500 that my neighbour had but couldn't drive so what was the point?

No age. Thanks for the memories. May you keep scoring 🙏 ♥️
  • I was Schillaci as a young boy having trials for Gillinghams youth set up. There were 2 kids of Italian heritage who didn't like him and were Baggio and Donadoni (I think) Brian Moore annoyed me as he kept pronouncing his name shil-acky instead of skill-atchy. Anyway, I was all about heading the ball that summer and learning the art of hitching a ride on defenders shoulders

He was my surprise footballing hero in the summer of 1990 along with Drajan Stoicjkavic,  Ruud Gullit, Rene Higuita, all of the Cameroonian players after their insane first game, Gazza and Gary Lineker

Came across as a thoroughly good man as well and I've got a bit of dirt in my eye hearing this.
  • Fond memories of watching Italia '90 in Australia whilst touring around out there. Schillaci was the 'break-out' player of the tournament....too young....RIP

Very sad and no age to go. I loved Italia 90 and Schillaci was a marvel.

    RIP
  • Will always remember the look on his face when he scored. When football was still football (only just though)

    RIP

    TMI
  • Really sad. For fans of a certain age he is an absolute football icon. RIP
  • R.I.P one of the starts of Italia 90 along with Roger Miller
  • A star of one of my favourite World Cups, in an alternate universe there would have been an England v Italy final. What a player he was.

    RIP
