Today we are back on the road with a trip to The Lamex Stadium and a match with Stevenage who currently sit 15th in the  League One rankings, having started the season with two wins, two draws and three losses.
We need to get back to winning ways after the debacle of a match and the 2-1 defeat against  Blackpool at The Valley last weekend, we've gone toe to toe with Stevenage on six previous occasions winning three, Boro one and the remaining two contests ending all square, we shared a goalless draw at The Valley during the last meeting in last April, so not a great deal of match history to go on there.

We will be donning our yellow away kit again, and will be well supported as per usual with another sold out away end.

So here we go...

Dan Potts will make his first appearance for Charlton in the league in this afternoon’s trip to Stevenage.

Josh Edwards makes his return to the starting XI after suffering an ankle injury against Leyton Orient in August, while Alex Mitchell, Karoy Anderson, Tyreece Campbell and Matty Godden also start.

Should we start in the 3-5-2 formation used for much of this season then Alex Mitchell and Potts would join Lloyd Jones, wearing the captain’s armband, in a back three in front of Will Mannion.

Kayne Ramsay and Edwards are expected to operate as wing-backs which would leave Conor Coventry, Anderson and Tyreece Campbell in a midfield three behind Daniel Kanu and Godden.

Gassan Ahadme misses today’s clash after suffering a fractured nose.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer, Macaulay Gillesphey, Tennai Watson, Allan Campbell, Luke Berry, Greg Docherty and Chuks Aneke make up the substitutes bench.

Charlton: Mannion; A.Mitchell, Jones, Potts; Ramsay, Coventry, Anderson, T.Campbell, Edwards; Godden, Kanu

Subs: Maynard-Brewer, Gillesphey, Watson, A.Campbell, Berry, Docherty, Aneke

    And rightly so, re: Docherty

Slight change of shape then. Anderson and Coventry holding with TC as a 10. Have to feel for Taylor there
  • Well that's a confusing line-up. A 343 today with TC and Kanu wide of Godden? Either way Ahadme, Docherty and Allan Campbell have been punished for their recent form so people will be happy in some ways. Slightly concerned that our response to not enough happening in the midfield is to reduce the personnel there. Suppose it could be the same shape with TC in midfield but you never go full Appleton so I'd be surprised

As I said on the preview thread, I find it crazy he'd rather play TC as the third midfielder than someone like Taylor.

    Expect us to line up

    Mannion
    Mitchell Jones Potts
    Ramsay Coventry Anderson Edwards
    Campbell
    Godden Kanu

Not sure what to make of that 11 tbh
  • 3412 formation? Or 343 perhaps?

Tbf I've sort of wanted to see us attempt that formation. Let's see

Ahadme’s out with a fractured nose. Too early for Leaburn and Dixon I assume. No mention of others left out so expect they’ve simply been dropped.

The Addicks are without Gassan Ahadme, who misses today’s clash after suffering a fractured nose.

If that is the shape then Anderson won't be holding. He'll be shuttling between the two midfielders and covering as much ground as possible. Anderson couldn't be a more different player to Taylor and that role couldn't be less suited to Taylor.

Very brave and telling team line up.
Not least because the Captain is benched.
    Is Ahadme injured or dropped?
Looks to me that we're not going for ariel contests with Piergianni.

I think it's a 343 but it could also be 352 with TC as a 10.... Jones has totally rung the changes there and I can't really complain with any of them.

But Tyreece is neither a 10 nor a striker, he is a winger
  • I assume that one the breakage has settled down, Ahadme can play in a mask
  • didn't realise our away shirt was custard?

Surprised berry isn’t favoured and Taylor is never getting a game is he. With Kanu and Godden up top we can’t afford to hoof the ball up consistently so hopefully we play it round a bit more, it worked well for them against Cambridge in the BSM

  • 4-3-3 maybe? - Wouldnt be the first time that Kanu has been deployed wide.

Don't understand why TC is playing #10 (if he is) when he showed last game he's clearly best played on the wing.

    Hopefully it's 3 up top.

In a weird sort of way, maybe last week is going to be the catalyst for the season, in that it pushes TC into the side permanently, and we attack with three up front, whether that is TC wide, or in the 10 role (I'd prefer him wide...). All of a sudden our plethora of strikers looks thin, with just Chuks on the bench... Miles is on his way, but not ready yet (maybe Tuesday?). To my mind, our issue has been the lack of creativity from midfield, so I really hope TC works out in a positive way.

I’m seeing it as a double pivot a bit like
    Liverpool play

People on here just cannot accept that Taylor can only play in Coventry's position, unless we have an 8 man defence. We started the season short of an attacking midfielder and we are paying the price.

I’m hoping that this line up and the omission of Gillespie means we won’t be trying to play hoofball today
  • we have no use for too many in midfield anyway with our tactics. going with a 5-2-3
  • Dropping your captain and one of your top scorers is a statement.

From the OS it sounds like the same 5 - 3 - 2 formation with Campbell as the No.10.

Good to see Mitchell and Edwards back but surprised Leaburn isn't at least on the bench; maybe when they said "back in October" they were being literal.

One thing you can't say about NJ is that he's afraid to make changes.  Whether they work, as we saw last week, is another matter but perhaps this line up is for this game v this opposition.

    Up the Addicks
