PC advice

Wondering if anyone can help me to eliminate possible issues I'm having. I tried booting up my PC, but it's not powering up. The power supply is fine and lights are coming on within the tower and fans are coming on (inc those on the graphics card). However, I'm not getting any output to the monitor. I know the monitor and HDMI cable are fine, as I'm currently using them with my old back up tower.

Graphics card or CPU kaput? I don't have a clue, so is there a way I can eliminate possible causes to find where the issue lies?

I'm happy to take it somewhere (professional) to get sorted, but it would be nice to at least know what the issue is before blindly throwing it at someone, with the risk of getting ripped off.

Do you have an onboard Graphics Card on the Motherboard? - I know mine has its own HDMI slot

If so, is it worth taking out the GPU and then testing the HDMI Cable against the onboard Graphics Card... Another source of elimination then

Other suggestion, is what USB Ports are you using? - I've sometimes had issues where a USB device is plugged in and being a nuisance (stopping me from starting up the PC), maybe unplug them all, and see if that boots up the Computer properly?

Just looked and there is another HDMI slot further up, so I'd say yes. Would I need to remove the card to enable it to work?

    Not sure to be honest...

Maybe try the HDMI slot before you remove the GPU, and so save yourself the hassle if you dont need to.
  • Small contribution- try running dxdiag if using windows. This will evaluate if the graphics card has issues.

That requires getting some output to the screen. I'm not getting any signal what-so-ever.

Really hoping it's not the card, as it's £500 to replace like for like  :#

Still nothing from the board slot, which leads me to believe hope the GPU isn't the cause, as I really don't want to spend £500 on a replacement
  • Failing me being able to fix the issue, does anyone know any reputable repair shops in the Medway/NW Kent area?

If you have a GPU plugged in, the integrated GPU probably won't work so you might need to remove it and test that if you haven't already.
As FA said defo remove any USB devices and try again.
You could try clearing the CMOS if you are confident enough to take it apart and remove the little white battery from the motherboard - you'll be able to find instructions on how to do this online if you search Clear CMOS Battery + your motherboard.
Could also be a cable loose inside so make sure everything is plugged in firmly

I've been to Medway Computers in the past on the Strood Industrial Estate, unfortunately they're closed until Monday
  • Have you checked the monitor is on the correct input?
Guessing the monitor is turned on?
Have you tried the HDMI cable on say sky box to your TV to rule that out?

I'm seeing this on my monitor, using the HDMI cable with my old pc, so they are working fine.

That's fine. I'm not in urgent need of it, so next week will be fine. Thanks, I'll check them out next week.

    Would definitely recommend this guy:
Very professional, good value and I honestly think he cared more about my laptop than I did. Based in Lordswood, but will also come and collect.

As an alternative, these people have been around forever and are still going strong:
Used them once (although must have been getting on for 20 years ago) with no problems. Near Rochester Airport.
  • i thought you'd come out and said something not politically correct  :D
  • As others have suggested, you should remove your graphics card completely (don't leave it plugged in the pc) and connect the HDMI to your motherboards integrated graphics port.
Also, if you have an older graphics card laying around chuck that in and give it a try just to see if you can boot up.

What graphics card do you currently have, the one that may have failed?
And what CPU processor do you have? Not all have integrated graphics capability.

Now, that wouldn't be the first time  :D

    GeForce RTX™ 3070 GAMING Z TRIO 8G LHR

This is the graphics card. Not sure what CPU is in it though (I'll take a look later).

I tried using the onboard hdmi slot with the GPU removed, but no joy. I'll put the card from my other pc in it over the weekend.
  • Can you get into the BIOS? Depending on the make of your computer you do this by pressing DEL or F2 or F10 or some other key (combination) immediately after turning it on.

I was thinking, my PC advice is steer well clear of them, especially if you’re a Black guy in a car and they’ve got a gun.
