It’s honestly impressive how good Wrexham’s marketing has been, leading to knock on effects like this at a League One away game.
Alternatively you could say the same about our marketing. Set aside a huge amount of tickets for Red White and Black Day, start publicising the game early and saying tickets are ‘going fast’ (particularly after a huge chunk of freebies have been set aside), the early publicity and talk of big crowds creates interest and FOMO, momentum builds and you can put out extra things like ‘20k tickets passed’ (not sold).
No idea if that’s what happened but I suspect it’s played a big part. No denying though Wrexham are providing a wider interest premium this season, Orient had a 200 bigger crowd v them than they did for the Boxing Day game v us, and Rotherham just had their clear biggest home of the season v them.
A lot of that is surely down to Wrexham having a large away following, partly because they're a club on the up, but also because they're playing at this level for the first time in 20 years.
I'd imagine that for most teams this season two of their biggest home gates will be against Wrexham and Birmingham. Especially when more than half the division don't even average 1k away fans.
Birmingham have a bigger away following (biggest in league), are the biggest club in the league this season, yet we saw 400 LESS home ticket numbers in comparison to the Blackpool game.
Saturday home numbers (ST’s, match sales, comps) minus away sales this season have been:
So for the Wrexham game (despite premium pricing that probably hurt Birmingham sales), we are already 5,000 tickets plus on every other game this season, will probably end up about +7-9,000.
It’s almost impossible to comprehend.
I am not surprised in the slightest. The interest Wrexham bring can’t be underestimated. As an example I was abroad on holiday in June and as it was the Euros got chatting to some Americans about football. They knew nothing apart from what they had seen on Wrexham, they hadn’t heard of Man United, Liverpool or Man City but only knew football through Wrexham. Also as soon as the fixtures were out fans of other clubs I knew were asking about coming to watch Wrexham. I am not sure how Charlton have sold tickets in home areas but they will undoubtedly be many fans bringing friends, lapsed supporters and football tourists.
This is pretty wild considering those sides play in the US almost every summer and 2 of them have American owners. Surely even if you don't like football you've at least heard of them.
A lot of the world won't like baseball but they've surely heard of the Yankees and the Red Sox.
Theres probably loads of people in the UK that haven't heard of the NFL sides playing over here.
Blows my mind people will moan that others want to watch our football club. Who cares if it’s their first game? Everyone has to start some time.
That's the point. You go to a football match the watch the match. Not to spend a third of it on the concourse supping a pint. If you want a drink stay in the fucking pub
Lost count the amount of times today that I had to let people in or out of my row whilst the match was going on. Not to mention the amount of people ambling up the stairs who then stop right in front of me blocking my view.
But no need to worry about me. I've got my ticket for next week but then I'm out.
Golfie, just out of interest.
Why come to the Wrexham game, and then give up on the rest of the season?
Someone genuinely phoned me during the first half of tonight's game to see if I could get 3 in a row for Saturday. Really starting to wind me up now. If train back is delayed tomorrow I'll be in the back of the campsite once I've collected the tent from home and stocked up on pot noodles

You can’t draw any direct comparisons between home figures because the number of comps issued can vary significantly. The club may well have issued fewer for Birmingham.
i’ll just drop in my usual reminder that there are very few comps for cup games because of the revenue split. Cup attendances are pretty accurate because of that and the fact there are no absentee STs.

agree with the first bit but not the cup bit. People don’t care about the cup until you’re playing a team in the division above at least. You can’t say that the people paying to see us play Cray Valley PM are the people who come to see us in the league as A) that isn’t an attractive tie even despite the local link and loads of people take cup weekends as a chance to do other life stuff they usually skip on a Saturday due to their season ticket

The point I am making is that the attendance reflects the number of tickets sold and the number in the ground more accurately than league attendances. There are very few comps because if the club issues them it has to pay the opposition a cash amount (after the small number allocated to players, etc). I’m not offering any view on who attends cup games - just that they pay.
Somewhere above it was suggested the Brighton crowd was inflated with freebies. It wasn’t.
Charlton + large home crowd feels like a story I already know the outcome too…
It feels like in our recent past bigger home crowds have helped; Brighton in the cup, Plymouth with a free ticket thing, Donny in the play offs (granted we lost the match but won the war, to mangle a phrase.)
I think the players will enjoy and perform well in front of a fuller stadium on Saturday.

If we don’t beat them I’ll certainly be a bit miffed. 🤓
Seriously? Check the table, it doesn't lie. We've played well in two games so far this season plus we'll be without Jones and Ramsey.
I don’t get the Wrexham love in . They have a good record at home sure but their squad is ageing .Three ex Addicks , two who didn’t particularly impress while with us . I’ve seen them twice on the box this season and their best player by far has been their keeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Their attacking players in Fletcher , McClean , Lee , Palmer and Mullin have a combined age of 163.

Here's hoping anyway.
