Charlton Athletic vs Wrexham
Saturday 26th October 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Sam Purkiss
Introduction
Its clear that we're fast approaching Halloween, as Charlton's performances over the month of October have been inconsistent to the point of frightening - Last Saturday we welcomed the League Two Champions to the Valley; Stockport County... It was a performance that should have yielded three points, however as we're used to with Charlton, nothing is guaranteed and we were forced to share the spoils - Tuesday saw a trip to Barnsley, a chance to quickly get another win under our belts and so return to the Play-Offs, instead we put in a Jekyll and Hyde type display which saw us snatch a draw from the jaws of an undeserved victory.
Lets see what transpires tomorrow... But one thing is clear... We dont do things by halves...
The Opposition
Name: Wrexham (2nd) - Manager: Phil Parkinson
Ground: The Racecourse Stadium
Previous League Result: Wrexham 0-0 Huddersfield
Some may argue that its always sunny in Wrexham at present... Others in the region will think that its a bit marvelous... Yet however you look at it, Wrexham's rise from the National League has been rather efficient under their latest owners who will have their own Hollywood reputations on the line should ever this fail... No place to hide when you're at the top.
The question is though... How long can Wrexham sustain this meteoric rise up the Football League - The step between National League and League Two has always been minimal, given the amount of teams that have previously achieved back to back promotions to the third tier, in such a short space of time - The leap to League One can be very different though, and whilst teams will have the confidence of knowing how to get promotion, achieving it from this level can be a bit different...
Wrexham's start at this level (their first since X) has showed no signs of them slowing so far, the Red Dragons sit in second spot, and apart from a disastrous second half against Birmingham City (beating them clearly isn't to everyone's taste at this level), they've known how to grind out results, a 1-0 defeat at Stevenage is the sole time they've lost this season. Unsurprising given that Manager; Phil Parkinson will be looking to win promotion from League One for a third time, with a third different club.
Charlton Team News
Once again it seems that injuries are rearing their ugly head at Sparrows Lane, with a number of players absent in recent weeks; Kayne Ramsay has sadly joined their ranks after what appeared a nothing challenge against Stockport, truly confirming that we're cursed as a club when it comes to injuries - Its meant that Nathan Jones is slowly having to resort to creating some kind of Frankenstein's monster in terms of a starting line-up to try and grind out results.
Its meant that Terry Taylor has finally been given the opportunity to come in from the cold, and has shown why we signed him in the first place, finally offering us some sort of threat from set pieces... The next step to try and teach the Strikers to finish off chances, something that Luke Berry demonstrated with great success on Tuesday night, and may well come into the starting eleven himself this coming Saturday.

On course to be the highest league attendance at the Valley since we played AFC Wimbledon back in February 20221

Very glad the preview thread is up so we can actually talk about the football for a bit! Wrexham are very direct so wouldn't be surprised to see a return to 3 at the back. I'd like to see Anderson/Doc play as, although they haven't been great recently, they add some physicality and I wouldn't mind seeing them clatter into their midfield to try and unsettle them a little bit. I'd like a Leaburn & TC front pair, can see their CB's struggling with that level of pace and technical control2

I’m think it’s quite likely we go to a 3 at the back, as we finished the Barnsley game. With no Jones and Ramsay I think we could do with the extra security. And Palmer & Mullin will be a handful for just 2 centre backs to deal withIf we do I think this is the game for Zack Mitchell to come in, adding a bit of height to our defence. I’m expecting something like:
Mannion
Mitchell Mitchell Gillesphey
Watson Docherty Coventry Edwards
Berry
Leaburn Campbell
Would prefer Edwards at LCB, and Small at LWB but I think that’s unlikely. Just hope Gillesphey returns to his early season form if he’s back in a back 3.Can’t see us keeping a clean sheet, and I also can’t see us scoring more than 1 goal. So I’m going with 1-1unless the rumours are true and Aneke returns to the bench

I agree that zach should henceforth be involved. Small did well last game.so

Despite our mid sixty mins of misplaced passing, missed headers at Barnsley, we actually carved out four very good chances before the mass substitutions. Miles and Matt Godden, who had three chances, should have done better, but the last three games have been a vast improvement in chances created than went before. That said, our back line with Mitchell and Gillesphey doesn't look solid or aggressive, not winning headed challenges from corners or free kicks into our box is putting us under pressure and Mannion was flapping, punching and missing crosses that would have been dealt with weeks before. So for me that's where the changes will be in either personal or formation, Potts and Zach Mitchell look the likely candidates but who misses out ?
Will Taylor start again, I don't think him being in midfield with Coventry was a disaster but it wasn't a raging success either. I'm going for a two nil home win and hopefully a few players getting back to fitness.2 -
5-1 to Wrexham. The white pele with a hat trick, Ian Rush and Dobson also getting on the score sheet.5

We felt the absence of Lloyd Jones and Ramsey keenly on Tuesday and I think we will do so tomorrow against a direct and well drilled side like Wrexham. I'd like to see Zach Mitchell come in for Gillesphey, although I suspect that Nathan Jones will go with a back 5.
Hopefully we can improve upon our record of one first half goal in 12 league games, as we need a decent start in this game.0 -
We seem to be in drawing mode at present, so I'll go for another Desmond.0

A back four with Watson and Gillesphey against a good attacking team is the stuff of nightmares. 0-3 and an embarrassing day all round.0

Their biggest threat is actually their RWB Barnet rather than Mullin/Palmer as he provided the assists. Small/Edwards will be crucial to this0

Without Jones and Ramsey in defence and still not firing properly up front I can`t see us getting anything from this game.
Wrexham visit us at a time we are under strength and we need to be at full strength to get any sort of a result.
Hoping to be proved wrong.0 -
All I can say is with all the hype in the build up if we lose this game by being outfought and looking lightweight against a team that will 100% be up for it then the meltdown on here will reach epic proportions. I really hope some of our players read CL and stress to everyone else that any half arsed attempts at football will cause nightmares.
I think this will actually be a high scoring game and it will end up 3-2 to either side0 -

Just hoping that the boys have in them not too lose this, don't want a draw so I go for a home win, 2-1.1

My brutally honest pre-game take.
Keeper -Unreliable
Defence - Trending in the wrong direction.
Midfield - Not a single player has nailed down their position and we're fannying around with formations to disguise that fact.
Attack - Haven't produced though admittedly they're feeding on scraps.
Maybe we put on a show and win this weekend but nothing I've seen this season suggests this team have got a run of good results in them and without that we're not getting anywhere near the play off spots.5 -

Just based on form any points at all from this game will be a bonus. They have 3 wins 2 draws 1 loss, we have 1 win 2 draws and 3 losses. They are 6 points above us.0

Just when you think you've got a potential weekend without the suffering... Boom... Up I pop3 -
I'm going tomorrow and managed to get my exact seat I had as a season ticket many moons ago in the north upper.
A few of my 'mates' have got tickets in the Jimmy Seed because one of them is Welsh. They're Liverpool fans from London so are wankers by default.
I'm nervous already. Not because of the usual Charlton dread I get on a Friday afternoon, but because I love this club so much and want them to be seen by this many eyes in a positive light.
Nothing less than 100% commitment tomorrow should be accepted, although really that should be the case every week.
I also still feel like we'll be in and around the mix come May, which is odd for me as I'm usually so pessimistic and have very little evidence to back up that claim. If we turn up like we did against Brum and to an extent Stockport, we'll be ok.
please....12 -
This game would be perfect for the Jones and Mitchell partnership with the directness of Wrexham. Our press needs to be spot on tomorrow.
Really dont want Gillesphey starting tomorrow or ever again for that matter but imagine he will. If Z Mitchell was fit, Id have him in there as he has some mobility at least.
Not sure why everyone is expecting us to get a hiding. Birmingham and Stockport (should have won) was good and whilst Barnsley was bad, we got a draw. I'm led to believe that is a good thing...
Think we will get the win. Will go 2-0 Leaburn and Berry.8 -
We need to win. 1 win in 7 otherwise, which is totally unacceptable at this level

Yes. A must win.0

Although I can't make it, I'm still feeling nervous about this game. With so much hype and build-up coupled with a large attendance, I want us to come out and impress the paying public.
Team selection, current injuries withstanding, is paramount, I would like to see Taylor, Coventry & Doc in midfield at least. Godden and Miles up top and Z. Mitchell back in defence.
Win this and 8 points from 12 from the 4 games is not a bad return and keep us in touch.
It won't be easy, but neither was the Brum game, but we stepped up then, so we can do it! We just need the players to give it their all!
