eSIM for non UK usage

Anyone got any experience of using an eSIM whilst overseas for mobile data?

And importantly any recommendations for where to buy from.

  • Yes, in South Africa. I used Maya and setting up was a little tricky. My partner used Airalo and it was really straightforward, we both saved a lot of money.

We turned off our usual EE sims so we didn't get double charged. The only small issue was if you needed a text verification code.

We'll probably both use Airalo next time we're outside of Europe.

Thanks. Do you know if with Airalo you must load / activate whilst in  UK ie before you travel?

Installed it in GB. It won't find a network so no chances of being charged for roaming here. You register your UK number and it'll show up in any WhatsApp-ing when abroad, not a dodgy foreign number no one knows
Disabled EE sim when leaving GB (you can't do this in airplane mode, at least with Android)
Landed and activated the Airalo/Maya SIM

Then back in GB just turn back on your normal SIM
The esim auto expires so no worries there.

It is a slight phaff but well worth it.
  • I used Nomad eSIM for the USA and Canada. Installed it there, and it was fine on my Android but couldn't get it to work on my son's Apple phone.
Coverage was fine in cities, not so good in rural areas, so better download maps, etc.
  • Tried it once.   Paid about £40. Didn't work. Wouldn't refund.  Was all very complicated
  • I used Maya in South Korea last month.

I hadn't heard of eSims before my trip, so actually installed it when out there. Was a bit fiddly, and took a day to sort out, as the "APN" setting didn't work first time round, but will definitely use eSims again.
  • We used airalo last time we were back in the UK. Worked well. This blog piece was useful;

  • I used Holafly for Mexico a few weeks back and it worked brilliantly.

You install it in the UK but just need to switch the esim on your phone and turn on roaming for that esim as you land.
  • I've used airalo in malaysia, India and China and never had a problem. It's only data but, it's cheap and pretty quick.
  • Another +1 for Airalo. Used it in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Vietnam. No issues and they have resources to guide you through setting it up. I've used it on Android and my girlfriend has used it on apple.

  • Used Airalo whilst in USA but my Apple phone kept switching back to Sky and I kept getting charged. Might be more to do with Sky because they are robbin' b*stards!!
  • Saily is good....... part of Nord Security....... used it for Canada....... easy to set-up and deactivate.
  • I've used Holafly a few times with mixed results.

The best and cheapest one I've used is through my Revolut account. Worth getting a Revolut card for the exchange rates on foreign currency, and there's lots of extra bonuses such as access to the eSIMs.
  • Used Airalo in Turkey last weekend, have used before. Works well, just turn off roaming on the main line and great data coverage. Can all be done from the app.
