Quirky British Christmas hits ?

Comments

  • "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth", various versions out there, although Shane McGowan missed a trick but not covering it.
  • The Red Red Robin
  • The most appropriate one is surely 'All I Want for Christmas Is a Dukla Prague Away Kit' by Half Man Half Biscuit.
    I love Old Tige.
  • Christmas is Really Fantastic - Frank Sidebottom
Also, Christmas In Australia. "Christmas In Australia is different to Christmas here, they have sun and lager and we have snow and beer..."

Talking of Aussie Christmases, Kevin Bloody Wilson has done loads of Christmas tunes. Can't repeat the titles here though.
  • Not British but 'Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas', 'Christmas Is Going To The Dogs', and 'Christmas, Why You Gotta Do Me Like This' by Eels.
  • What are we going to get for er indoors - George Cole and Dennis Waterman was a classic if it's type.
  • Everyone, thanks again for your suggestions, several of which are already on the playlist.

I've got two follow-ups. One is re the lyrics of "Dukla Prague away kit" which I'm going to have to explain, live, on air, and probably in Czech😂. Is the away kit on the Subbuteo team, or is the kid himself wearing the kit while he's playing?

Now I've got another track I want to get hold of if possible. It's Springsteen doing "Santa Claus is coming to town', live. BUT not the version that's easy enough to find. The one I'm after starts with Bruce doing an opening monologue wherein he talks about "Me' n' Steve" (van Zandt) walking at night down a snowy street (I suppose Asbury Park), and then some kind of Christmas magic happens. It's pretty old - in my fading memory bank, I  heard it on Capital Radio back in the day,  played by Roger Scott, who was an early Springsteen champion. If this jogs the memory of any Springsteen fan, please lead me to it. Cheers!
  • Is this Christmas by The Wombats

Christmas In Hollis by Run DMC

Proper Crimbo by Bo' Selecta Cast
  • Christmas My Arse - Ricky Tomlinson.
  • I found the Springsteen track: The Summit, Houston 1978, but Roger Scott must have got hold of the promo single that it first came out on, as it was only officially released relatively recently as part of his archive series.

Perplexity.ai tells me the  reference was really to the Subbuteo team  - and also that the song is a parody of "All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" - so we'll have to play them back to back!

Although it's a song about Subbuteo (and Scalextric), I'm not convinced that the Dukla Prague in question refers to a Subbuteo team. I think it's referring to a real football kit, based on the line " 'cause his uncle owned a sport shop and he'd kept it to one side". Maybe some sports shops did sell Subbuteo, but it seems more likely to be a real football kit to me. Probably all too nerdy really, and I'm not sure that the lyrics bear that close an inspection.

Also, I'm not sure that it's a parody of '... Two Front Teeth' although it certainly looks like the title has been lent from. That said it, makes a great juxtaposition, so well worth playing together.

Will we get the chance to hear this show? I ask because I've a couple of friends who are big HMHB fans and I'd love to be able to send them a clip of the song book-ended with Czech commentary.

Yes @Stig when I had a look at the lyrics I thought the same as you. I’ll take another look at the sources for the other version.
It will be easily available live on www.radio1.cz , running 08.00- 11.00 GMT, but no playback. I’ll try and give you a headsup on when that track will play, if you like. I think I’ll have a go at persuading Tomas to play The Red Red Robin, since he is very impressed with CL coming up with so many good ideas😀 Just cringing at the thought of listeners thinking “oh yeah, Charlton, how are they doing now?”😡
  • Cheers Prague. Is that tonight then?

Another shout for Guadete…..Steeleye Span an ancient  Carol, sung in Latin.
Traditional and beautifully done one has to say.
  • Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin Stevens is an unexpected Christmas classic.

    No, Christmas Eve morning.
  • Excellent. Thank you.

  • Shout out to Half Man, Half Biscuit. Among their wonderful tracks are classics like Joy Division Oven Gloves, Restless Legs and obviously their Dukla Prague track. Classics of their kind.
  • Bit of a cheat, but jimi Hendrix recorded 3 Christmas/New year tunes. see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XLoZTubRoc
He played the Auld Lang Syne 'Live' at the Band of Gypses concert at the 'Fillmore East' on New year's Eve 1970.

  • Great shout @ken from bexley, this is exactly the kind of obscure track from rock/blues legends that my buddy loves to play. I've forwarded it to him

This may be enough for me to persuade him we should include The Red Red Robin with a shoutout to CL. 😂 I've asked the question...

Sports shops deffo sold subutteo and remember replica kits, especially foreign ones, weren't as readily available at the the song is set ie when they were kids so 1970s.

    The song is about Subutteo.

PS Subutteo is also mentioned in the Undertones "My Perfect Cousin" and it features on the cover of the single.

How many of my suggedtions made the playlist prague?

Used to get my Subutteo from Showell Bros in Eltham.

Half sport shop, half toy shop.

    I loved it in there.
  • The darkness - Christmas Time (don't let the bells end)

We are still very much working on it...

The Jethro Tull one almost certainly, he's a fan and has the album. I would have gone for Gaudete but he doesn't like folky stuff so no Lindisfarne either. I have to check out this Canadian "Band" you mention.

OK quiz time. Anyone:  What's the type of keyboard used  on the intro to Slade's Merry Christmas, and what's notable about this one? Tomaš told me this one this week, type of thing he likes to tell his audience....

Did they borrow it from John Lennon in the next studio? Also think it's a marmonium

Correct on both👏. Except you spelt it wrong, it's a harmonium. Not that I knew, until this week!🤣 he always has these gems. He played Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" on Saturday, and explained what the title refers to. I never worked it out in all this time!
  • Bob Dylan.
    Must be Santa.
  • @IdleHans

Oh, my days! How could I not know about this? Absolute corker!

I think I've already got The Red Red Robin on the playlist but this should guarantee the complete Charlton Life takeover of the show ;) . Tomas is already floored by the Hendrix one, above, he's got probably the biggest rock/blues album collection in the country, and he couldn't find it anywhere on his 40 + Hendrix discs.
  • It wasn't a song about Christmas but it certainly was a Christmas Number One - Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)
