Help needed to ID some old Charlton photo

Help needed to date and locate this photo donated to the museum this week.

We assume these are Charlton fans at an away game, maybe post WW2 so could be Elland Rd for the 1947 FA Cup Semi-final but that's a guess.

Can anyone ID the police badges or give any more info?

  • I'm probably wrong but the guy at the front to the right of the corner flag (with the big ears) looks like my Great Uncle, Reg Buss. I know he was at the Elland Road match as I've got his programme from it. Next time I see my mum, I'll ask her if she thinks it's him.
  • From one of my favourite ever websites  https://www.britishpolicehelmet.co.uk/id13.html

  • The perimeter wall in the photo is quite distinctive. Images of Elland Road at that time show a similar wall in terms of design and height. Dave Mehmet may have the definitive answer, but in the absence of that, I'd suggest Elland Road is a decent guess.

Plus all the crowd are in flat caps so must be up north.

Cheers Russ, look forward to hearing from your mum

@DaveMehmet = wouldn't that be fantastic if it is him!
Love old photos like this - the one in ModMag this issue of the East Terrace (showing Keith Peacock) had me desperately trying to find my old Dad whom stood bang centre on this giant terrace every match - unfortunately just too blurred to make out faces in detail. Chris Mansfields old photo site had hundreds of old Woolwich and surrounds photos - came across one of me in 1972 from the local paper, I am as clear as day in it, at a petrol leak incident by the Ferry (in a splendid tank top) watching the fireman hose down - remember the incident but had never seen this photo until 50 odd years later.

Can you post a link to this website you mention ?
  • The 1960s St Johns Ambulance Uniform below looks very similar to the one the chap is wearing in the photo. Equally, the rattles shown in the photo above were banned in the early 1970s I believe.

Unfortunately Chris appears to have taken his main collection of old local pictures down recently - maybe it was expensive hosting the site? I  believe he ran "Readysnacks" if you remember it near the Ferry and his family also had the café on the OLD Ferry Approach too I believe - he has gathered and taken loads of old local photos to preserve for future generations.  Great photographer.

He retired to Deal I believe and his site is still up but appears to have only recent additions ? His old Woolwich/Plumstead area photo collection was amazing.
