Just reading up about him and while I remembered he came into the pro game late I didn't know he was 30 when he signed for Plymouth (he doctored his birth certificate on the advice of Plymouth manager Malcolm Allison to make it look like he was "only" 28.

He was 32 when he joined Man City and still won the league, FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners' Cup.

Came into the professional game aged 30, and then made over 300 appearances winning the League, FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield, European Cup Winners Cup.

    A great story. RIP

I didn’t know that, he was a model professional.

Also won  Player of the year with Dave Mackay of Derby County about 1970 sharing the award together.

I don't remember him as a player, but I always seemed to have loads of Pannini stickers of him when he was managing Man City. RIP.

Fine player I remember because of the rarity of a player of his mature (in footballing terms) years becoming a full time professional back in the fifties and sixties.

An injured Len Glover was up against him in the 1969 FA Cup final and was unable to do much as I recall.

    RIP Tony.

Followed Malcolm Allison everywhere as a player and hopefully Manchester City will do the right thing at their next home game for such a long-time servant.

Tony Book didn't come out of the "City!" documentary too well....but then again neither did anyone from Manchester City until John Bond showed up. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch (6 Parts). Grainy footage but a check of records says that's Carl Harris scoring for Leeds in Part Two.

Amazing to think that Man City got to the FA Cup Final at the end of that season. A few shrewd signings did wonders for them and they gave Spurs a tremendous couple of games at Wembley.
