Rotherham United vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 18th January 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Darren Drysdale

Introduction
"Masters of their own Downfall" has a poetic ring to it doesnt, not quite the same as "Masters of the Universe", but then again the Addicks didnt quite have the power to overcome Preston North End, as we bowed out of the FA Cup on Tuesday night. Lets not brush the performance aside though, we gave it a damned good go against the Championship side, and if we continue to play like that for the rest of the season, well who knows what might happen... Its a big IF though.

The Opposition
Name: Rotherham United (13th) - Manager: Steve Evans
Ground: The New York Stadium
Previous League Result: Rotherham 3-1 Bolton

Putting the FA Cup to one side though, and the Addicks now have no other distractions, and can focus solely on the League for the rest of the 2024-25 campaign - At present we're doing a bit of a Tour around the North of England... with Rotherham United the second of three games in one week.

Rotherham by all accounts have been a disappointment this campaign, and am sure their fans would be the first to admit that - The second coming of Steve Evans made a lot of fans think that their relegation from the Championship would be short lived, after all one of the more successful Managers in the lower echelons of the Football League would give most fans cause for optimism, especially after his achievements with Stevenage last campaign.

Unfortunately that hasn't been the case, and whilst Rotherham did their business early (seven players were signed in May), they've just not been able to click and is proof that whilst its great you can do your Transfer dealings early... It doesnt always work out; Jonson Clarke-Harris was the headline act, a Charlton target 12-months ago, he's got just six league goals to his name this season, but will still be a threat - The Millers themselves with a bit of form, they're unbeaten in their last four matches with two wins against Lincoln and Bolton - Victory will see them go level with the Addicks, proof at this stage of the season, its still anyone's game... this isn't the Premier League, so nothing is certain until its mathematically certain!!

Charlton Team News
We've started to see a bit of consistency from Nathan Jones with his team selections of late, and whilst the performance against Preston will have taken a lot of effort, I doubt we'll see too many changes amongst the starting eleven - Naturally two players must drop from the bench, as we return to having just seven substitutes rather than nine, yet even that isn't a given.

For example amongst the starting eleven we should expect to see Miles Leaburn and Ashley Maynard-Brewer back in the starting eleven, the latter was rested for the Cup clash as Will Mannion took over the role of Cup 'keeper... From the bench I'd expect to see Daniel Kanu drop out, after his minutes have become limited of late, and may well head out on loan before the closure of the transfer window, whilst we've also got the slowly returning Kayne Ramsay to come back into the fold - Zach Mitchell over Rarmani Edmonds-Green is the other name I expect to see, especially as the Academy graduate was given minutes at Deepdale ahead of the latter.

Maynard-Brewer
A.Mitchell - Jones - Gillesphey
Small - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Berry
T.Campbell - Leaburn

Substitutes Bench: Mannion - Z.Mitchell - Anderson - A.Campbell - Aneke - Ahadme - Hylton

I’d rather see Kanu on the bench instead of Ahadme who simply just doesn’t seem to fit with our play imo and, having seen a story of Campbell wanting to return to Scotland, perhaps we should be filling his bench spot with somebody else if he does want to move on. If Kanu isn’t fit enough I’d prefer it if we use whichever U21 striker is the most in form atm and fit enough to keep running and pressing for whatever amount of remaining time from coming on to the the final whistle.

two teams who've found form recently, difficult to predict the outcome, should be a good game, looking forward to it .. would like to see Taylor in the squad, has he fallen out of favour or is he another on the crocked list ?

Rotherham match is a good test for checking how we are focusing again after FA Cup cut. If we wanna achieve playoff positions we have to face every match as a single final, no other way in my opinion.

We don't win against Steve Evans teams. Draw, probably.
  • Think this is “the crunch” game. We’ve been on a decent run and this should tell us whether or not we’re actually getting there or just fell onto some transient good form. Tough place to go so a win would start to make me sit up. A loss and you have to ask are we back to square one. For me it’s still all about our lack of goals when we’re on top in games. Until that’s resolved I think we flatter to deceive.

Arguably the two most significant games of the season coming up.

    • Rotherham United have failed to win any of their last nine Football League games against Charlton Athletic (D5 L4), since a 1-0 home win in January 1983.
    • Charlton Athletic have won on each of their last three visits to Rotherham United in the Football League, as many wins as in their first 16 such trips (D4 L9).
    • Rotherham are unbeaten across their last four league games (W2 D2), with the Millers winning four of their last six league matches at home (D1 L1).
    • Charlton are unbeaten in each of their last six league games (W3 D3), keeping four clean sheets in that run.

It's Evans, I'm fairly sure it's illegal for us to win against him. Unfortunately though given our start to the season we have to, so let's hope we unsettle the natural order. If we play like we did against Preston then we'll do it, just need to finish a bit better.

I fully expect "The curse of The Lardarse" to apply here.

    2-1 to Rotherham.

Our recent performances have been a lot better than they were but , and there is a but, we still seem to draw too many games.
Our last two matches one in the league and Preston in the cup we created more than enough chances to win both.
But we drew one and lost one.
Our next 4 games are all winnable in my opinion so anything less than 10 points will not really prove we are good enough.
Win tomorrow and it sets us up nicely for the Bolton game followed by two home games against sides near the bottom.
    Head says 1 1
    Heart says  2 1 Charlton.
Enjoy the game all those who are going.

Rotherham have been doing better recently and it’s Steve Evans. A draw would be a good result

Should be targeting 8 points minimum from the next 4. Win the 2 home games and either 2 draws or 1 win from  the 2 away games.

If we are to sneak into the top 6 we are going to need to win some difficult away games so it would be great if we could start doing that this week

Need at least 4 points from these and Bolton to hunt the pack, anything less would be woeful, when you consider they're two teams around us.

I reckon 1-1. Think we will have the chances, but not enough time put them away.

    Safe travels to the travellers

Charlton Athletic have failed to beat a Steve Evans side in their last 9 League Games

The last win was away at Leeds back in April 2016

I think at least 3 points if we win the next four after them which I think is possible.

Got to start winning these sorts of games really to have a realistic chance of making top 6. The gap is wide enough as it is.

This is what concerns me, feel like he always gives us issues.

Is there a Nathan Jones v Steve Evans teams head to head?

Tip of the cap to our travellers, can’t make this.
    Head 1-1 heart 0-1.
Agree with an earlier comment need 4 points from the next two games to stay in the hunt.
6 would really show we have at last gelled as a team. COYRs!!!

I've never really been a 'must win' person when it comes to games. However, we are halfway through the season and have two big matches coming up. If we don't get the required results and those teams above us do, I think realistically we can kiss the play offs goodbye. Or am I being really overly pessimistic?

I'll be happy with 4 points from the next two games.
