Finding street kids & turning them into Premier League players of the future. (To paraphrase him)
And that is worth £10m is it. Because there are no other assets. And btw......the club loses £10m a season (or thereabouts). So in 18 months they've spent £10m buying the club, £15m just keeping in going, and another few million on transfer fees. And what have we made during that time ? Selling Alfie May, CBT and ????. No "street kids" or anyone else from the Academy.

It's a guaranteed loss making business from our position, 100 to 1 shot at least that they can turn a profit on this venture1

Do they actually use the term “street kids”?0

Thanks for sharing and for me that was an interesting interview as I had never watched the 'Sunderland soap opera' when Charlie boy was there and never listened for long to any interviews since he's been at CAFC.
I found it insightful from the point of view of why rich folk get involved in football and Charlie Methven's, Eton Education will have given him confidence, arrogance, a network to use and if all fails use his Theology university studies at Exeter to pray that Nathan Jones, a well known Welsh believer can produce not only young players to sell on but move the team up the table and into the Championship !
An interview with wide eyed Charlie and Harry Stebbing seemed a comfortable setting for CM with their Business of Sport podcast. Charlie Stebbings also went to Exeter university and I read that Harry is a successful (so far) venture capitalist.
Some mistakes by Methven with Nick Pope coming to CAFC after his academy days but interesting thoughts on the FA and women's football which CM wishes CAFC weren't involved with as he feels they should be independent of the CAFC mens team as they have a % of funding.
I agree that some of the youngsters come to Charlton as they will get 1st team opportunities sooner and hearing 1st hand from Ademola Lookman's close friend from his Waterloo days, that was why he signed for CAFC. Charlton received about 8 million and Lookman has gone on to be a Premier player and presently successful at Atlanta. This is the exception rather than the rule and if Joe Gomez doesn't get a transfer soon the 3.5 million received, won't have a financial rainbow for CAFC.
Not sure our Academy is quite as successful as Charlie makes out in the last few seasons with most drifting down the Pyramid.

I caveat that by saying I haven't listened to the podcast but those words are on screen so I'm assuming it's what Methven said.0 -

We've not sold anyone for a decent fee for a few years (Burstow ?) and before that probably Pope & Lookman.
It's not as if we are churning out the likes of Gomez, Parker & Bowyer once a season. Last 2 seasons the Academy boys have done ok & have mainly filled in when needed to. Only TC is worth any money atm.1 -

We got the bigger fees for the outstanding young players, but arguably those should have been even bigger, and we weren’t developing others as well as we could have. £3.5m for Gomez and £2m for Konsa (a year later sold for £12m) isn’t much.TC wouldn’t have progressed like this under previous managers. Appleton destroyed his confidence and sent him backwards, we were close to another club getting the chance to build him bacl up.
I spoke to a Bristol City fan yesterday evening. They generally float around in Championship mid table, but they’ve also sold players for huge fees. I expect that’s a place this ownership want to get to, get it right and you can use some of it to help fund further progression in the Championship. They’re clearly not going to fund multi million pound signings at this level without player sales.0 -

It's a huge loss making enterprise at all levels of the pyramid -
You are constantly competing with others who are prepared to spend more and be more frivolous with the money attained.
Championship teams are losing considerably more than league one as they try and get promoted.
The prem is mercilous and unless you spend the funds you have very little chance of staying up.
A WBA or a Norwich can go up get the parachute payments etc - and yo yo making it harder for other teams to compete.
Look at Burnley - Parker just bought that kid from Lisbon - he will be on high Weekly wages for sure.
So you need very very deep pockets and the last few chancers who sold a bill of goods to naive morons holds no real chance of positive, competitive future for the club.
We need large scale investors ala Wrexham or Birmingham to out spend the competition.
Look at Bournemouth traditionally a league one club - now fully esablished prem team with a wage bill well over 50 mill -
They broke all the rules and managed to spring board into the premier league - That's anyones onlt shot now - or an extreme set of high quality players coming through the academy that we don't sell ala Southampton 15 years go with thier double promotion.

Was interesting how smug Methven looked when the guy said "Is that it?" about the £10m purchase price, and the reply saying yes my niche is finding clubs in distress that need a quick sale.
Felt like 'Look how clever I am getting clubs cheaply', forgetting that they paid more than both of the previous owners - one when it was a Championship club, and one in exactly the same position.
Duchatelet money paid £14m and he got the real estate for that as well.1 -
1.8,1.9,2mil for the academy- does anyone know how much of the lottery money and Valley Gold gets invested in that?

I love how he talks about we want 'the best Women's team' in the country- lets be honest
That's how it all started
