Was really saddened by this news. Patrick was brilliant writer and was always a joy to listen to when giving his opinions about football. Think I will revisit one of his books in his memory.

Met his brother years ago, who was a newspaper editor here in Bermuda. We talked about Dundee and Charlton and Patrick's work, as well as their time following Dundee.

Patrick was obviously a talented writer and a proper football supporter.

He made that show much more watchable. Articulate and knowledgable and nowhere near as full of himself as most sportswriters tend to be.

I'm about 2/3 of the way though All Played Out by Pete Davies, book written during Italia 90 - a lot of the journalists he deals with out there come across very badly, and Davies clearly dislikes most of them.

Patrick Barclay comes across as a completely decent, knowledgeable and personable guy.

I liked his work a lot. Real loss to football journalism.
